I was listening to some SRV earlier and that got me thinkin that I've never explored a TS. I think I might like to play around with a TS but I have never actually used one and have no idea about the differences between the different models. I don't want to sound just like Stevie with it nor will I since mostly it will have HBs or P90s behind it and I'm not 1/10 the player Stevie was. Plain and simple I want a nice blues lead tone. I think since the HRDx is said to be a "blues" amp anyway they might make a good match. Since I've got a good paying job coming in a week I'm willing to spend the money on any one of them to try one out. The Boss Blues Driver is not really giving me the blues tone I was hoping for. Or any other pedals I should check out? Still being inexperienced the only way to know is to try them out I guess.

it's a reproduction of the classic. And if it doesn't do it for ya, send it over to John. That pedal will get you the closest to what you want. I love mine.

check out robert keeley's tube screamers, www.robertkeeley.com. I personally use a modded boss SD-1 for my overdrive, but thats a bit more of a rocker's pedal. Not to say that you couldn't get a good blues tone out of it.

I can also suggest that you dont get the analogman silver mod TS-9 from analog mike. Here's why:

One day my guitar teacher decided to invite a couple of his students (me and another guy) to check out his rig In the jam room of the building he gives lessons in. His rig consisted of a few effects units on the floor, a few rackmount effects units (cant remember exactly what), a marshall JMP-1 through a peavey tube power amp, through a mesa/boogie 1X12 speaker. Most his effects units were true bypass.

So, the other guy who's there checking out his rig (jonathan), has brought his boss metal zone and ibanez TS-9. Another of the teachers comes in, sees the TS-9, and decides to grab his analog man silver mod TS-9 to do a side-by-side comparison of the two.

We hook em both up, do an A/B, and none out of the four of us could hear a difference in the pedals. In fact it seemed the only difference was one cost around 90 dollars or so and the other cost a hell of a lot.

I'm sure there must have been a slight difference in the pedals, but (to me) it makes sense that if you're payin that kinda money to get somthin modded, it better have a major noticable improvment/change.

I can't speak for his normal modded TS-9's though, from what I hear they're a bit more of a return to a TS-808-style mod than the keeley mod, which is more of a general-improvment-of-fidelity mod. The right tube screamer for you really all depends on what you're lookin for in a tube screamer.

Well after getting my modded DS-1 back from John it's just what I've been wanting in a distortion. I've got a Blues Driver and an OS-2 also. The OS-2 covers my need at the moment for some classic rock overdrive. It's a nice lead blues tone I think I'm missing right now.

I'd gladly fix anyone here on the forums up with Tube Screamer mods and at about less than half of what Robert and Mike charge for their mods....For me it's a hobby,for them a business.....

So what is the difference in tone between the TS-9 and the 808? I've always heard about the mid spike in tube screamers but how are the highs and bass on those two models?

out of the box, I like the little Maxon OD808, but I can groove with most TSs

the two I haven't tried though, are the Ibanez TS-9 RI, and the Ibanez 808 RI

I have an Ibanez TS-9 reissue with the Analog Man mod, a Maxon OD-9, and a Maxon OD-808. All of them do the Tube Screamer-thing exceptionally well.

Funny thing is, when I talk to our electrical engineers about the JRC4558 chip, they laugh at me. They say it's a P.O.S. op amp.

They just don't understand...

I have the Analogman Silver Mod and a stock reissue that I will probably send to Analogman for the regular mod. I like the Silver a lot (got it used in a trade) and it replaced the Barber LTD I traded it for exactly the way I wanted...just a bit of extra mids than the Barber.

If I were you, I would scour the boards for a used RI and use it for a while with your rig. If you want to have it modded, you will know exactly what is lacking for your rig and you can mod accordingly. The stock pedal even work for you!
