Re: For those of you that play 2 or 3 main guitars...

I have a few guitars with similar, but not exactly the same pickups. I figured out a long time ago that, for me, no matter what I play, it sounds essentially the same. My guitars can each get a handful of useful sounds, and they are pretty different from each other. But when I play them, they sound the same- so figure.

I'm also in the "similar pickups" camp.

To most casual listeners, they probably sound the same. I can hear which guitars have which pickups though.

If I was a touring pro I'd have 2 or 3 of the same guitar just for backup purposes and consistency. Since I'm not rich, I'm definitely not a pro and I have no use for guitars that cover the same ground, my 2 electrics are about as different as you can get and I love that versatility.

All of my guitars have either alnico2 or ceramic pickups in them. The Paul sounds like a Paul, the Strat a strat, the SG, PRS, etc. But I find with those two PU's I can swap guitars within a set and never touch my amp settings. The EQ stays in the ballpark really well. And each guitar still has its own personality.

2 main guitars here: different guitars, different pickups, different tuning.

^^ This ^^

I prefer my Tele sound as a MAIN 'sound'...but my Gretsch can sound nearly identical to Tele, my PRS can sound very close to a Tele...and in the end, the 'variation' is actually very minimal. So why bother? Because they all DO have that subtle something that the others don't... and that is cool. Still in the end I sound like me no matter what and I find that liberating and truthful. it wasn't always that way.

Cheers and much respect!

Re: For those of you that play 2 or 3 main guitars...

A Strat with a bucker in the bridge is my main guitar and my go to for every time I go out with my band or any jam. Now, I only do this because I live in NYC and have to rely on the subway to take me everywhere. So that means I'm not schlepping a Strat, Tele, Dot, AND my pedal board from my apartment in Brooklyn to my studio in Queens.

I'd consider them all my main guitars, but the Strat is my #1. They all have pretty different pickups, not to mention other characteristics. The strat's neck pickup is similar to the tele's, that's about it. It helps when you have a compressor ahead in your chain. I wouldn't see a big problem using two different guitars live with the same rig. If anything, I would only have to adjust one or two controls on either the amp or the compressor to level anything out.
