for those that crave a more metal sounding JB pup

dont know if anyone is aware of it but it is possible to keep the lengendary JB tone but increase it's power.
dimarzio uses a larger than standard alnico 5 bar mag in their PAF pro's(these alnico 5's are the same size as a DD's ceramic)
well IF you can get these or have a old pro you dont use pop it in the JB
and voila! A meaner, more metal sounding JB pup :)
this is the same as using a larger DD ceramic mag in a duncan custom, same great tone but a higher output.

Re: for those that crave a more metal sounding JB pup

That's cool... one question though: why on earth do you need a higher output JB???

Re: for those that crave a more metal sounding JB pup

Hmmm, this is quite interesting.... I wonder what would happen if one would put the magnet from a PRS #7 (no one knows 100% if it's alnico 2, alnico 5 or ceramic, but "common belief" is that it is A5) into a JB.... The #7 bridge is only 8.4K but it's quite hot and perceived output is more like in the 12-14K range, so I'm guessing the magnet in the #7 must be gigantic and/or extremely effective... Man, maybe I should try that myself.... If I can get a handyman to help me out that is, lol :D

Re: for those that crave a more metal sounding JB pup

Very interesting! But the only thing a JB needs is bigger bass response IMHO, ouput is fine. SO how about the low end with the bigger magnet?

the bass comes up slightly :)

Re: for those that crave a more metal sounding JB pup

wtf.. the JB doesnt need a bigger bass response... what you want probably is that it sounds fuller, more pronounced in the bass register, but it doesnt need more bass response.. it's maxed out already...

and thx, i dont need more output LOL

davey, in all fairness many others that try the JB say that it lacks bass.
I have heard that complaint a lot at the music store i work at as well as right here on the pup lounge :)
it is real good that you feel it needs no more low end but some other seem to thing it does?

Re: for those that crave a more metal sounding JB pup

noooo, you got me wrong...

it's not the bass response that's lacking to many ears.. it's the lack of bass in it's EQ, it's a TOTALY diferent world

i really dont know how to explain it with words or how to point your ear to listen to a specific thing in the music/clips

it could sound a little fuller, yes. but i find it great the way it is =)

when i played the JB with a MESA it had plenty of fullness/low end
then through my JCM 800 it was much thinner and did not have the gain i like.
so the amp has a good bit to do with it as well obviously
I am just praying that the combo of X2N and jcm 800 work out :laugh2:

well, of COURSE the amp has a lot to do with it... and it also depends if you're running it with close or open back 2x12, 4x12 combo and if you got it cranked.. higher volume -> more air is moved -> more bass and fullness

be sure to let us know how the X2N works out hehe

This is starting to veer slightly off topic, but after reading this thread last night, it occurred to me that I hadn't tried my JB through my SD SFX-01 Booster Pedal. It really brings out a whole new dimension on the JB. Almost gives it a single-coil vibe.

Its worth trying if you have one. ;)

Yes it was posted just for the guys who say " i love the JB but i wish it was heavier sounding"
well to those and only those this mod does what they want
:)

Re: for those that crave a more metal sounding JB pup

I think the present mids need a little more bass response to compensate and to stop it from going murky/mushy in the high mid departement. The JB can be a difficult pickup to work with sometimes because of it's eq. That's probably why so many guys have a love/hate relationship with the pcikup. Well at least I do :) My ears prefer the more balanced C5 now.

Do you have soundclips SABOTAGE?

Re: for those that crave a more metal sounding JB pup

Also, another thing to consider is the guitar it's going into. Some guitars it's too bright with not enough smoother bottom end and some guitars it's just fine.

Re: for those that crave a more metal sounding JB pup

Check out the specs for the JB and for the Distortion. It would appear that the two are very similar with the difference being alnico 5 in the 16.4K JB and ceramic in the 16.6K Distortion. Duncan used to list the JB at 16.6K, so I suspect they are both wound very similarly.

Actually, they're wound exactly alike. Same gauge, numbuer of windings, etc. The only difference is the magnet.

In fact, the JB with an A2 is an Allan Holdsworth pickup! Try it! So like the Custom family:

Alnico 2: Allan Holdsworth
Alnico 5: JB
"Big Daddy" Ceramic: Distortion

add to that the Invader, the Invader also uses the same coils just different magnet(s), and poles
