AC30s especially with Blues are pretty deceivingly heavy. Anything with big transformers even SS power amps can weigh a bit (just got a Marshall 9040 and that is pretty weighty). On a similar note, not sure why guitarists really need big amps though, Hunter and Collectors played at the AFL Grand Final (Australian Rules Football Final) at an over 100,000 capacity stadium with just an AC30 and a half stack.... the line arrays provided volume...

Because "big" and "loud" don't quite mean the same thing. I don't believe in packing all the chunky wall-of-sound tone of a high wattage amp driving a 4x12 into a small, portable box. For a tight, defined and kicking low end, you need a lot of headroom, because on the low side of spectrum speakers are inefficient and humans are half-deaf. Bass rigs sometimes reach into kilowatts. In general, headroom comes with power, and power comes with weight.
I'm lucky I've never hauled an 8x10 fridge. These are probably the heaviest single piece of gear still in common use. Oh but the tone, man, the tone!

Most Twins aren't THAT heavy, IMO. They've got some heft but they're not impossible to manage. The Twins that are REALLY heavy - the ones that everyone complains about, are the Silverface ones from the late 70's/Early 80's that were pushing 135 watts or some damn thing like that. They sound good but they're stupid loud with almost unlimited headroom.
A friend of mine uses one as his main gigging amp and I don't know exactly how much it weighs, but it weighs more than my birch ply 4x12. The thing is a friggin' brick on wheels. Sounds good though!

I agree. I used to gig with my '65 DRRI until a few months ago when my health wouldn't allow me to but, even though I weigh more than the 65 DRRI, I always found it to be very difficult for me to carry because I'm a tiny fella = even though right now I'm way over what my normal weight should be. :2:

I have a a Super Reverb that I gigged with along with a 50W Marshall 900 combo. The SR is very heavy. My Bogner Shiva is also very heavy for a 1 12" combo. Nowadays I prefer my Deluxe Reverb to gig with. Most of the clubs I play are small so the DR offers me all I really need. If I am playing a larger venue I have other choices but I really like my Deluxe to gig with. It's small, light and efficient.

What an awesome amp. I saw Albert Collins a few years ago. He was playing through one as well as Freddie King used to play through one too. Great sounding amps....
My Quad Reverb is a beast but it sounds so flipping great.

My Mesa/Boogie Mark III 1x12 was also heavy as hell for its size. It weighed about twice what you'd think it'd weigh just by looking at it.

Dan Auerbach from the Black Keys play a Quad also. Yep I have been playing that baby for years. Here is me right after I bought the amp around 33 years ago. I had it sitting on top of an Ampeg V4 and drove it with a Distortion + and a Morley Power Wah Boost. Maximum Metal (at least for the 80's it was).

I looked at the specs, solid state rectifier and how many 6L6 are in that thing?
Do you just run it clean with fuzz in front or can you ever get breakup out of it without stunning birds and small children?
My Quad Reverb is a beast but it sounds so flipping great.

It has 4 6L6s and 6 preamp tubes. You have to wake the neighbors to get any type of breakup, when it does it is very subtle. The speakers will break up before the amp does. In my case it is even harder seeing I replaced the speakers with Celestion G12T-75s, a stompbox is strongly suggested to get some dirt and funk.

I have stayed away from really big & heavy amps 'cause I'm 5 foot 7, a hundred thirty-five pounds, and built like a 14 year old. Biggest amp I ever owned was a Super Reverb. As others said, not really that heavy but darn awkward to move because of the dimensions. I prefer my 4x12 with Celestions because it has casters and handles on the sides, not just one handle on top like most amps.
I have stayed away from really big & heavy amps 'cause I'm 5 foot 7, a hundred thirty-five pounds, and built like a 14 year old. Biggest amp I ever owned was a Super Reverb.
