for you that like sabbath

Davey

Goliath of Tone
a little treat.

now stop bugging me, that's the only song i know more than the main riff :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:

what do you think about the tone?

who likes the solo? i did in no way intend to recreate the original, just something i came up with, during take.. 4 i think lol.. "refined" it a bit, till take 7, but at take 10, i just couldnt be bothered anymore LOL
j/k, i like the way it turned out, but the tremolo bit could be a bit better.

if you can be bothered, download the mp3.. i still got a feeling the hi-fi stream plays the clip a fraction slower than the mp3.

enjoy :)

more clips to follow during the weekend, cos i'm putting together a song, cos i'm auditioning for a local hard rock band :headbang:

Re: for you that like sabbath

That's pretty good, I'm more into the original solo though, but that's probably because I'm a big fan of Tony Iommi's playing. If I could actually play guitar, I'd want to play like him! ;)

Re: for you that like sabbath

do i look like iommi? :eek13:

lol

i dont even know what the original solo sounds like, cos i havent listened to the song in a lifetime

Re: for you that like sabbath

I have a DVD where Troy Stetina shows how to play the solo note for note, and I used to be able to play it (not on the same level as Tony though), but unfortunaly tabs aren't included with the DVD so I can't even tell you how to play it. I think you should be able to find some pretty accurate tabs on the net if you want to, though.

EDIT: here's a clip from the DVD. just remembered it also exists as a book and CD edition.

I like it, although I'm an enormous fan of Iommi's playing and tone, which makes me more critical of Sabbath covers by default. The tone and style you have going is more along the lines of Randy Rhoads, which is nice in its own way. There's a bit too much buzziness going on for my taste. Is there any way you can get those power tubes cranking, or will you oust yourself from your home if you do? Sounds like you've got the pre-gain cranking, but there's not much coming from the post-gain.

BTW, the tempo is exactly the same regardless of stream or download for that SoundClick track. I think the backing track is just a little slow, making the song sound a bit sluggish.

Sounds like a lot of criticism, I know, but I do like what you've done. Hope this helps.

Even better, learn it by ear!!!

are you nuts? this thing is ****ing loud!!!!
yea, the buzzyness disapears when i crank it, but i cant do it ATM, without an attenuator.

then it works... if you upload an mp3 with the sample rate above 44.1khz, it screws up the streams.
a casual observer might not hear it, but trust me, it's there.

no worries. i apretiate this kind of criticism :friday:

sune, i dont wish to recreate the solo note by note.

Re: for you that like sabbath

No problem, I was just mentioning it :laugh2:

Anyway, KGMESSIER, have you ever tried a Laney? Do you know how loud they are? ;) Try cranking my TI!

Re: for you that like sabbath

I guess I wasn't clear in my post. I know the Laney can crank. My question was whether or not you were cranking it. Like you said, cranking the post-gain will smooth out the buzziness. In my house, I can't do that without the neighbors coming after me. I thought maybe, out of consideration for your housemates and neighbors, you were getting the gain out of the preamp stage rather than blasting the power amp.

Sorry for the confusion.

Re: for you that like sabbath

no worries.

i dont have neighbours to speak of (they're either moved out or dead), and there wouldnt be a problem realy cranking the amp, while my mom is out (which she is today), cos she's real bitcy if it's too loud

the problem is, I would need to move to the next block, cos you can not be in the same room the amp is in. your head would explode.

Re: for you that like sabbath

ok.. i cranked the mother.

master volume on 10, gain on 10.

sweet mother, have mercy!
this is seriously way too loud for anything but a packed venue.

the buzzyness is inherent to the laney a bit, as it's not a superultraheavy tight amp to begin with (not that i have a problem with that, i LOVE the way it souds), the loss of definition is the mic placement and probably my mixing board too. the mic was getting a full frontal lobotomy, so i had to turn the volume on the mixer WAY down, so it wasnt clipping the entire signal lol.
it was also way too basy cos of the vast movement of air hehe.
but i loved how it sounded.
the bottom end gets tighter and, there is an audible trebble increase, mostly due to my room (which makes the trebble be percieved like a hornets nest)
this will be a very very good amp for gigging though.
i'm not regretting the purchase one bit

as for the boss SD-1 .. that thing couldnt boost itself out of a paper bag... but i got it for real cheap, so it'll go on the mod bench.
honestly, the laney sounds WAY better without the boost, than with the boost. the sd1 only adds noise and trebble.

anybody got a mod to recomend?

Re: for you that like sabbath

Or consider any of the myriad Rangemaster clones available. Iommi used a cranked Laney with a modified Rangemaster.

Re: for you that like sabbath

I haven't gotten tired of it yet, lol!!

Re: for you that like sabbath

Ahh, I thought the tone was weak and tinny....................................

of course I am listening on my laptop................

Re: for you that like sabbath

One of the few songs I actually know the solo for note by note. I don't mind your take, sounds good.
