Re: Forget about that Randy Rhoads Marshall...

Hahaha, I saw a dude bring one of those to a gig once, and I thought: "Man, what's he doing with that old-skool amp? It probably has, like, no gain!!!!!!!!!1119"

Then he powered it up, cranked it and -- WUH-HOo0o0o0o0o0o!!!!!!!! He must have modded TheLivingDead out of that thing because it had some intense, ultra-serious, extremely high-gain.

tr00 story.

Re: Forget about that Randy Rhoads Marshall...

Yeah...JTM-45's are cool amps. They're the original Marshall thatKen Bran copied from the Fender tweed Bassman. This one is probably not worth the asking price though...the seller says both transformers have been replaced. I would think that would lower the value significantly. Still, it's a very cool "looking" old amp. Lew

Re: Forget about that Randy Rhoads Marshall...

Thats the Marshall for me!

I got lucky enough to plug into an original JTM-45 once and have wanted one ever since.

One day I'll get one or have one built. The Germino classic 45 is a VERY, VERY good JTM-45 clone...that might have to do for me.

Lew, you ever own an original???

Nope. I did own a real nice Marshall Plexi 50 watter. Bought it off of Scott Morgan who fronted a Detroit/Ann Arbor band called the Rationals back in the 60's. Nice guy and great singer. Cool amp too! Wish I still had it.

Was that the small box 68 (I think) you sold just a few years ago???

I like those too...the small box 50 watters with EL34's and a SS rec...great amps...

It was a small box, but not the ones I sold a couple of years ago. Those were metal face model 1987's from 1970 and 1971. The one I bought from Scott in the early 70's was a Plexi. It had a very smooth warm tone...smoother sound than the ones I sold a couple of years ago. I believe it was the same model that the Allman Brothers used to use.

Ahh...very nice!

I do dig those early metal fronts but they are a bit brighter and more aggressive than the plex's...and they only got more aggressive as the 70's went on.

Yeah. By '74 they were no longer hand wired, and the voltages became higher as well. That makes for a brighter, crisper tone. Yngwie likes those better though. I think he prefers the '74 model 1987. Jeff Beck likes the model 1987 too.

Yep...I know he's played lots of different amps over the years but when I think about Jeff Beck I think about a late 60's 50 watt Plexi...

Re: Forget about that Randy Rhoads Marshall...

Something looks wrong about the pics. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but it looks too new. Everything looks new. Also, why pay that obscene amount for an amp without the original transformers in it? I wouldn't pay half that amount for it. I'm way not interested in it to be completely honest. It's too clean. There's no dirt inside or out. All tolex is spotless from the pics. Looks like it was well made, but I have doubts about it being real or worth the price asked.

That's funny, b/c I thought the same when I saw the pics too. The amp is either extremely clean, or there's something fishy. Regardless, that's a cool amp tho.

Re: Forget about that Randy Rhoads Marshall...

Nothing about it looks fishy to me...it is clean but thats a good thing! I'll tell ya this...after I saw the auction I started looking at prices and was amazed by how much an original JTM-45 will bring these days...even with replacement trannys that is a pretty good price!

all that said, I don't think I could ever drop that kind of coin on an amp...Greg Germino has the Marshall thing down so well I bet a player could be just as happy with a Germino as with that amp!

Re: Forget about that Randy Rhoads Marshall...

That is one Marshall that I have never had the pleasure of rocking through. They have such a reputation that I really need to check one out.
