Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup!

First off, I mean no disrespect to Mike, the people voting in the pickup spec polls, or the polls themselves. That's all good, and we may end up getting somewhere with it.

However, I think we need some clarity here, and maybe share some ideas before we go and decide the fate of the second SDUGF pickup.

This thread isn't about magnets, wire gauge, or anything like that. It's about what you WANT a pickup to give you. Tell us in simple terms what your dream pickup is. Compare it to the existing product line if that helps you. Even better: tell everyone what kind of stuff you would play with it and what your dream pickup's tone would be. If there's a specific player, album, or song you have in mind, post it here.

If someone posts something you think would be a cool pickup idea, reply to them and let them know, or explain what you would change about their idea to better suit you.

And of course, be realistic. There's no point in discussing something that can't be made.

The goal of this thread is to simply brainstorm. Maybe an idea will come out that we really dig. Maybe nothing will come of this at all. We'll see.

Oh, and if you have more than one dream pickup (say, a Strat single and a humbucker) post them all!

Remember, avoid talking about specs if you can! This is just an ideas thread.

I'll post my ideas in a little while.

Thanks in advance for contributing!

Strat bridge pickup that is FAT.

A lower output JB with the focus in the lower mids.

I think that Stratdeluxer's thread pretty much nailed the thing I want... a hot tapped Tele in a Strat single pup (a hot Twangbanger)... just because I know it's an issue credit goes to Jeremy and Stratdeluxer. ;)

Rio Grande Stelly

It has just a little more DC resistance then the Twangbanger (8.6 vs 8.3...) and it is flat... not what I was thinking about...

Plus with the Rio Grande prices I can throw a little extra and get myself a custom shop model...

Fair enough on the output...but Rio Grande's are pretty cheap. I saw a Stelly online for like $60.

Yeah...something fat for strat bridge,i like Johns idea :)

So far so good. Here are mine:

1. JB Lite. I had this idea months ago. Basically a JB with the output dialed back a bit and an EQ spectrum that is a bit more normalized. I love the harmonics, and the high mids really suit a Strat quite well, but sometimes I feel like it can get a bit out of control. I need something that will let me go into vintage PAF territory if I dial the volume back, and still have a chunky feel when cranked. And no, I don't want a C5 - I need tighter bass and more of those JB high mids. Output of the Custom series is about right though.

2. Fat Stack for Strat bridge. I would like a noiseless Strat pickup with controlled treble, strong bass, and rich and thick mids. It should clean up nicely when the volume is turned down, and absolutely rip when cranked. It should also sound good in a notch position with the Classic Stack or CS+ in the middle. I'd call this a medium output pickup - it should be able to compete with a low-output humbucker in terms of power. If it were possible to tap it and make it sound like a Classic Stack Plus, that would be ideal, but I'm sure that would be complicated.

Tight low end
Thick, but not overwhelming midrange
Smooth high end

Keep the guitar's character through

As hot as a Custom.

So basically a custom's low end, the distortion's midrange and... ok no haha the Custom is pretty close to what I want. But with a slightly more vintage tone.

The JB lite sounds great!

The way we are doing the pickup thing now is cool though...were kinda putting all the SEPRATE things we want and were going to see what comes of it! I like the idea and think its damn cool.

Re: Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup

I want a pickup that will make me sound exactly like satriani. there.

Re: Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup

I'd want something that is a modern-voiced bridge humbucker, but not wound uber hot to the point where it'll cause my small stone to distort, preferably below a custom in output (I guess 12k-13.5k would be good). I'd prefer it to look a little different too, like Big rails, or preferably one coil Big rails / one coil slugs, just because I'd like something that not only sounds different and modern, but looks it too. For the band I'm in and especially for the guitar I plan to put it in, that'd be a good combination.

That sounds pretty good. I myself am somewhat interested in the rails or half-rails thing, though I don't really consider that a priority. I agree it would definitely look cool, and may provide some benefits in terms of bends etc.

So if the JB Lite was wound a little less hot than a Custom and had one or more rails coils, would that suit you?

Re: Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup

Fat sounding single coil on the lines of the Twangbanger or the A2 Texas Hot Custom bridge pickup...The pickup could either be coil tapped to toggle between say 6 to 7k and 10K,maybe have degaussed magnets...The pickup would retain most of it's highend jangle and vintage styled mids, but have more overall lows(If possible)....Basically an even better hot rodded strat bridge pickup on the lines of the Antiquity Series Custom bridge pickups....Lew,Jeremy,and Curly have also thrown alot of great ideas into this pickup now!

Just a thought for now!?

YES. I like the JB except that mid spike. If that was modified and in the spirit of a JB Lite I'd be cool with it, rails, half rails whatever is cool by me.

ALSO the fat strat bridge would be an excellent idea. I'd be into both, but if I had to pick either or I'd wait for a majority decision.

Re: Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup

For me, something in between the custom and the C5... The 13-14k output is right in the zone of what I like for more aggressive music.

I never liked the C5 but I do love the custom... a pick-up that quite close to the custom but a little smoother in the highs and a little more 3d... that'd be exactly what I want/need right now.

Re: Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup

I'd want sometheing sparkly in the high end but also beefy and can't take distortion well. I love the 1960 Strat pups, so if you could mix that glassiness with something with a bit more twang and a beefy low end (like a Tele bridge pup) I'd be happy. Basically, a Strat pup that's a mix between an SD Vintage '54 and a 1960 Strat bridge s/c. That's about the only thing I could see replacing my Lace Sensor in my Strat!

A stack P90 that sounds like a real P90...
