Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup!

Re: Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup

For me, something in between the custom and the C5... The 13-14k output is right in the zone of what I like for more aggressive music.

I never liked the C5 but I do love the custom... a pick-up that quite close to the custom but a little smoother in the highs and a little more 3d... that'd be exactly what I want/need right now.

The biggest problem I have with any of the humbuckers above about 8.5 to 9k,is the loss of note articulation...It's always a trade off for me and my style of music...As you increase the overall output, windings etc,you do get balls, but you also get more mids, and that loss of clear noting when playing with overdrive...

This has always been one of the reasons I never liked the JB..The mids are screwy!

The Brobucker has been perfect though for me,in that it crosses this fine line nicely for my tastes..

hotter wound surfer...

Re: Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup

Thanks for the input Joe.

Yeah, I am definitely curious to see what Duncan can do with an A8.

I'm not entirely sure it would be in my "dream pickup" though ... I'm thinking of this like a "black box" - ideas go in, pickup comes out.

Re: Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup

Nice Thread RD!
I am a big fan of the PATB sound. But PATB tends to sound more beefy ,and i would like to have one with less compression and output!
The Forum PU must be something special i think! That's why i think SD's own design (PA) would be a perfect candidate.
I want enough Balls to get a really good chug ,enough output to push the Amp but still enough clean when you roll the volume knob back! The PATB-1 is a great base i think.with more highs ,less midds and a tad more aggresiveness is what i'm looking for.Something like between the JB and Distortion ,but with more articulation and less agressiveness..More life than the custom. And insane nice complex harmonics!

Re: Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup

Fat sounding single coil on the lines of the Twangbanger or the A2 Texas Hot Custom bridge pickup...The pickup could either be coil tapped to toggle between say 6 to 7k and 10K,maybe have degaussed magnets...The pickup would retain most of it's highend jangle and vintage styled mids, but have more overall lows(If possible)....Basically an even better hot rodded strat bridge pickup on the lines of the Antiquity Series Custom bridge pickups....Lew,Jeremy,and Curly have also thrown alot of great ideas into this pickup now!

Just a thought for now!?

I have one guitar and it's a SSS strat. I down with StratDeluxer John's idea.

Re: Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup

Humbucker to make thin sounding guitars fatter.

Like a JB or Demon with thicker bass, a LOT more low mids and the treble rolled off a bit.

Re: Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup

I'd like to see a combination of a Demon and a PATB-1. Demon's tightness, attack, clarity and that hi-fi vintage vibe and PATB-1's EQ and maybe resonance freq too. Blades or PAs. One blade and one regular is nice too.

I'll say it again although I said it before.......supersonic attack, focused mids but still airy (that's a Demon feat) , CLARITY/ARTICULATION (very important) and a tight growl. And never fuzzy. Extremely precise with a cutting attitude.

custom's output would be good.

That's my dream.

I agree with you on that... the brobucker's covering almost all the bases in my les paul... but there's something about the custom in my LTD that I just love too, although I'd like it to be a little smoother in the high-end...

I don't know if what I'm looking for is feasible but I just stated what I'd like.

Without a doubt, the brobucker is a killer pick-up and I definitely share your appreciation of it.

Well if the brobucker works for you, why would you change it out for what we're making?

We got the hot vintage last time around, it's now time for the modern/vintage crowd to get theirs.

Re: Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup

i'll be going with the flow on whatever happens. all i hope to happen is something good comes out of an all new design which hopefully will be something more than just like a magnet swap on a current production line pup. Also it will be cool if this pickup will be versatile enough/balance out no matter what guitar it goes in(i.e. no better in alder than mahogany). right now all i got is stock pups in my sg, so i'm guessing pretty much anything will be an improvement

Re: Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup

Tight low end
Thick, but not overwhelming midrange
Smooth high end

Keep the guitar's character through

+1 on this concept. I have a couple of Custom 5's and have had a couple Custom Customs and like both pickups. I want a bucker with a fatter tighter bottom creamy mids and smooth highs and just a little more kick than the Custom 5. I'm thinking a Custom wind with a hot A8 magnet in a trembucker will just about do the trick for me :bigok: !

Re: Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup

I'd like to see something like the JB Lite described previously (better low end, slightly pulled back upper mids and output), or a Custom Custom with a better low end.

Re: Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup

A very nice dream!

Maybe I'll order something like that from the CS if this custom run won't make it for me.....:headbang: :fing2: But to have a touch of the PATB-1's tone too, not just the EQ.....I feel that this pup has a REALLY nice tone.

Re: Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup

I'm thinking of it in terms of breaking the mold a little, and come up with something that would grab attention for SD because it's a new buzzword....Alnico 8.

Right now, we can get about any variation of classics we want, but this A8 pickup might get people excited about it, if it kicks butt and everyone raves about it. Suppose Seymour and MJ came up with the perfect combination around the A8 magnet and had something that could be put into production for $10 more than most models? It could be a good seller, giving SD the reason to order A8's in bulk like their other magnets.

Based on some of the good feedback from A8 Customs, maybe an optimum wind could make it a winner.

Im thinking this way too!! I love the C5 and the custom. Here's what I have in mind..

I love the Custom. Powerful but smooth. If I could have a Custom with just a tiny bit more in the low mids ( a bit of Custom custom collagen) and inject the whole thing with alittle more paf warmth botox. Keep the power, and the smoothness.

And then one of the forum bros (maybe even Gearjoneser if he ever records that instrumental album he keeps threatening us with) cuts a big selling album using the A8 pup. He tells Matt Blackett in a magazine interview that ya he used this A8 special edition pup. Sales go through the roof.

I see where you're coming from.

Im on this bandwagon too!! The results I got with my Custom8, id go a few bux more for the magnet. Plus, Im all for breaking some new ground. Im sure mj and Mr D could create some magic monster around that new heart..

Bring forth the TITAN 8!!!!

Re: Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup

I dont know how all the DC resistance/wire gauge/magnet type/ stuff affects anything, but I'd like a pup with high output, lots of tight bass and crisp highs with neutral or ever so slightly scooped mids. Somehting that will have good clarity and punch for crunchy palm muted stuff, and retain that clarity when you are doing 64th note palm mute chunks at 140BPM.

Dude PATB is a great design.I say it all the time ,and i will never get tired from saying it.It's so sad so many people tried many PUs ,but not a PATB!it's like Visiting Paris and don't visit the Eifel!
