Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup!

Re: Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup

I'm thinking of it in terms of breaking the mold a little, and come up with something that would grab attention for SD because it's a new buzzword....Alnico 8.

Right now, we can get about any variation of classics we want, but this A8 pickup might get people excited about it, if it kicks butt and everyone raves about it. Suppose Seymour and MJ came up with the perfect combination around the A8 magnet and had something that could be put into production for $10 more than most models? It could be a good seller, giving SD the reason to order A8's in bulk like their other magnets.

Based on some of the good feedback from A8 Customs, maybe an optimum wind could make it a winner.

WERD!

Nice Thread RD!
I am a big fan of the PATB sound. But PATB tends to sound more beefy ,and i would like to have one with less compression and output!
The Forum PU must be something special i think! That's why i think SD's own design (PA) would be a perfect candidate.
I want enough Balls to get a really good chug ,enough output to push the Amp but still enough clean when you roll the volume knob back! The PATB-1 is a great base i think.with more highs ,less midds and a tad more aggresiveness is what i'm looking for.Something like between the JB and Distortion ,but with more articulation and less agressiveness..More life than the custom. And insane nice complex harmonics!

I'd like to see a combination of a Demon and a PATB-1. Demon's tightness, attack, clarity and that hi-fi vintage vibe and PATB-1's EQ and maybe resonance freq too. Blades or PAs. One blade and one regular is nice too.

I'll say it again although I said it before.......supersonic attack, focused mids but still airy (that's a Demon feat) , CLARITY/ARTICULATION (very important) and a tight growl. And never fuzzy. Extremely precise with a cutting attitude.

custom's output would be good.

That's my dream.

Those both sound like great pickups!

What sort of tone do you hope to achieve with this A8 humbucker?

Re: Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup

A '78, but with the output of the C5 with the C5's high end

...maybe with rails or PA pole peices...something different.

Edit: That is what I would like, its not a response to the post above.

Re: Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup

I think that Stratdeluxer's thread pretty much nailed the thing I want... a hot tapped Tele in a Strat single pup (a hot Twangbanger)... just because I know it's an issue credit goes to Jeremy and Stratdeluxer. ;)

+1 Thats what I would want for a Single coil.. I am botha asingle coil and a Humbucker guy... For a humbucker I would like to see a JB LITE... same great tone with less oputput and tighter bottom

Re: Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup

I have two:

I’d love to see a pickup based off the Screamin’ Demon design: I’d like to increase the output a hair and add a little girth to the bottom end, but retain every bit of clarity and punch. Something just a little hotter could be a great balance of openness and output. It needs to be airy and open, clear, and still have that Demon PAFish Hi-Fi vibe. Aside from increasing the bottom end and low mids (assuming they move together), I’d keep the rest of the EQ the same.

This one’s simple: Cool Rails Lead for tele.

Re: Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup

I'd like a bridge humbucker voiced for metal but with ZERO overall compression. a wide-open vibe, relaxed mids, and no excess bass. and the output doesn't need to be at nuclear levels either.

Re: Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup

A "better" JB - lose the harshness in the upper mids and add some low end

A C5 with more vocal mids

:headbang: :bigok:

Good call! I'd definitely be down with that.

I wonder how it would sound compared to the Hot Stack Lead.

Re: Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup

for the neck, i want an alnico ll humbucker, pretty much like the PG ive got right now...but i want it to be just a little bit hotter and even though its relatively smooth i would like it to be a little bit more buttery. for the middle i want a single coil that sound like a surfer and looks like one but is noiseless, and for the bridge i want the huge sound from the Invader but i want it to have a little bit more treble...and i want its leads to sound '78ish...pretty imposible huh??? if such thing exists let me know...

Re: Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup

I am not sure that its practical but I would want a tele/strat bridge pickup with 1/4 inch flat A2 rod magnets, a brass baseplate and a overwound coil like 16k. Something that is hot , fat and smooth. Something that is like a single coil version of the CC.

Re: Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup

Does Seymour Duncan make a pickup that is what the Gibson '57 Classic Plus is to the '57 Classic? In other words,a Duncan '59 Plus...something moderately overwound for the bridge postion,to give a bit of a tonal "kick in the pants" to a '59 set.Is this "Brobucker" that I've just heard about something to this affect?

Re: Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup

What I would like in a bridge humbucker is a tapped/splittable pickup; like I said in the poll. Untapped it would be basically a Custom Custom. Tapped, it would be an Alnico II Pro. When you split it untapped it would be a JD. Tapped Split, it would be an APTL-1. That pickup would do so much that Seymour would be partnered with Line 6 making the first "Modeling Pickup".

Seriously, that tapped humbucker thing is what I would like.

Re: Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup

I'd like to see something like the JB Lite described previously (better low end, slightly pulled back upper mids and output), or a Custom Custom with a better low end.

Sounds pretty good to me.

But then again, maybe something good will come of the 'majority rules' pickup selection. :)

Re: Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup

+1 on beefy demon or JB lite... good ideas.

I like both vintage spec pickups and also hotter ones, and I think this new forum pickup will be considered a 'med/high' ouput one.

I've always liked pickups like the C-5 and JB, and even have a 15.3K C-5, because I thought it would be perfect. I still think it's a great pickup, but I'm still curious about a similar type of pickup with a slightly difference voice coming from the magnet.

Given this rare opportunity, I'd go for the A8 because it may bridge the gap between an Alnico 5 and Ceramic Custom, and SD has never made one before.
No matter what it sounds like, I'd find a place for it in an appropriate guitar.
Most Duncans within reasonable specs sound great.....you just have to find the right guitar for them.

Re: Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup

I doubt A8 would make much marketing sense, if any at all.

Re: Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup

I mostly play (Heavy) Metal but after being blown away by a guitar I later found to have the PAF Classics I somewhat came to the conclusion that you should (mostly) get the Metal tone from the Amp/pedal and only let the pickup give a gentle push while still being sweet enough when used clean.

Thus what I'd need in a bridge pickup would be one that (especially in my overly bright maple fretboard Strat) takes away some of the brightness of the bridge while keeping enough for "cut through the mix" lead parts (like a JB but not as muddy/fuzzy), a tight sound that is great for harder things when used with the right rig but that can still produce a good clean Jazz tone, alone or in conjunction with a middle or neck pickup.

Does that make sense?

EDIT: Ahh, I just re-read some posts and it appears what I'm describing is kinda like a combination of the Beefy Demon with the JB Lite... kinda...

Spot on... this is what I jhave been talking about in a JB lite... I dont play heavy metal..but you are talking about just what I have been decribing in a mediul high oput put pup.. A LA JB lite.

Re: Forget the polls for a moment ... just post what YOU want in a custom shop pickup

Although I play Metal this kind of pickup would be great for many things, it could do great Jazz, amazing Rock and with a nice rig great Hard Rock/Heavy Metal.

It's about true Versatility and the ability to play two different things equally well without that "equally" being "mediocre"...
