Re: Forum design vote #6 (again)

Correct me if I'm wrong. I may be. Is the consensus that we're moving forward with the matching neck for the '59/C Hybrid bridge?

That was the plan. I think the poll is done....maybe DarkMatter should close it and move on to the next vote? The humbucker idea has been out in front by a large margin for like four days now with little change.

If I may, I'd like to propose a voicing with the body and character of the '59n, added the sharp pick attack of the Jazz.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I think you just described the Sentient.

Re: Forum design vote #6 (again)

Why everything I'm writing feels like deja vu

Cause you keep repeating it.

To me what you describe is a stand alone neck pickup idea... not a tonal match to the 59/C

To me a neck version of the 59/C would be a pickup that embodies the best of both the parent pickups but tailored to suit the neck slot.

Not a fan of what double screws do to pick attack either, if you want sharp pick attack then double screws is a step backwards. Double hex's would retain the attack and get the adjustability BUT to me they arent suitable as a "set" companion to the 59/C

Re: Forum design vote #6 (again)

In the past, people had missed votes so I'm going to let it run longer. The trend is clear though, so we should start closing in on what we want the humbucker to be. We should be more excited about this, it has great potential. What's next? Votes on the potentially contentious double screw coil, general voicing? In relation to the 59 /Custom, do we still want this new bridge pickup to be brighter, more clear, shift the midrange focus higher?

Hence my suggestion of starting with the '59 neck and developing a Custom neck to pull the coil from for a hybrid. How do you feel about that, EC?

I don't agree with this. I've experienced several alloys and with a fine tuning of the coil, you don't lose pick attack. I's the blend of the coils what brings up or down the pick attack and some alloys enhance it and some different form factor of the screws' head also generates what I call "pick attack", just in another "pitch", so to speak.

Well, I see where you coming from. But as a set, this "Bro '59/Custom" could be offered as a double screw too, offering a new basic tone by installing it in "reverse".

TBH, at first, tweaking also the '59/Custom wasn't part of the plan. But considering this an opportunity of creating something special just by fine-tuning existing technology, why not?

There you have it.

Mind you, this is NOT gospel. It's merely a proposal to the Forum which I'm keen on it and I've motivated every aspect to get a defined starting point.

Now it's up to everybody interested to decide to go through with it or to propose something better/different.

HTH,

Might I suggest the next vote? I have no say in how this is run, but I figured I'd toss some spaghetti at the wall and see what sticks. :p

How should the neck companion to the '59/Custom Hybrid bridge pickup work?
  • Start with the existing '59 neck (since the existing '59/C used the '59 bridge) and develop a Custom coil to match it in the same way the bridge version's coils match each other (this option may be used to spawn a Custom series neck pickup)
  • Develop two new coils using the same idea (one coil wound with 42 gauge, the other 43, like the bridge pickup) but with a target tonality that complements the existing bridge pickup -- to be determined in the next vote

I would be way into that actually... that would be cooler than an ice cream burrito.

Oh, lord! More voting? For WHAT? Once this poll is over...we're done! The pickup is described just fine in the original post. The "voicing" has already been decided on by vote (cross between low output modern and hot vintage), in this very poll ("the voicing starts with the 59/Custom but will have more upper mid focus, more controlled bass, cleaner, clearer. It will still have the hybrid complexity,") and by the statement, "Neck pickup designed specifically to pair with 59/Custom." We're gonna vote on screws now? Really? ****, man. Just give them the description from the OP and be done with it. Or are we trying to go FULL retard with the path toward creating this pickup? When does it end? This thing started last year, didn't it? This process has been guided by a seemingly neverending stream of unfocused, arbitrary, and contradictory decisions, and gross conceptual errors. We've backtracked, going from specific to general and general to specific with no apparent rhyme or reason. We've ignored poll results that some didn't like or couldn't figure out how to interpret. We've repeated a poll that never would have been tied if the "Hybrid" was properly named in the first place. We've made broad decisions that haven't been voted on. We've put up for vote a pickup that has inherent technical flaws, according to SD people or former SD people...and all after that pickup design was already voted down in the early stages. And now, on what is finally the last lap, we are talking about ways to drag it out even longer, by voting on things that have either been decided already, or that don't need to be decided, or that we've decided to leave up to the Custom Shop! And we wonder why there is little apparent interest any more.

It's over. What we need to do now is take a count of how many commitments to buy there are.

He has a point, though. If this keeps up as it has, the next vote will turn into a circlejerk about exactly how long we should age the mag.

Wasnt a comment on his point was a comment on his chumping his schnuts around like a methed out chimpanzee.

No one is talking about voting on mag aging not a single person, You're trying to create a slippery slope where there isnt one. Sure this process hasnt been perfect but thats no reason to go around screaming "You're all retards!" Sorry put Percival is over reacting and needs to relax his mammary glands.

Re: Forum design vote #6 (again)

^ You do understand the concept of taking an extreme example to illustrate a point right?
As for Itsabass, while the wording was intense, I too agree with the sentiment. WE'RE DONE.

If I were to judge from myself, the interest in it already is at an all-time-low. TBH I'm even debating whether I'm still interest, however slightly.
Taking a vote whether we want double screw/hex or whether we want it to begin with a 59 neck coil or go for two new 42/43 coils or whichever other deeply technical decisions that belong to the CS will only bury this in the ground.

Honestly, if enough people here were to express the feeling that the voicing was arbitrarily chosen (I do not agree but still) then MAYBE a final vote for the description on the voicing that will be COMPLETELY construction-agnostic might be ok. Although I could easily see this turning into another can-o-worms...

Re: Forum design vote #6 (again)

I fear the only thing that will save it now, is a good high quality demo before the order phase.

Because hysterics are such a good way to prove a point. People always listen to the guy in the street screaming "the world is coming to an end"

If people have a valid point it can be made without acting like theyve been snorting bennies for a week.

Re: Forum design vote #6 (again)

I'm actually kinda amazed that i have people blasting me cause i told someone to relax

I didnt bag on his point i didnt say anything about it. I told a dude to tone it down.

Re: Forum design vote #6 (again)

Blah blah woof woof screaming "You're all retards!" blah blah woof woof

We must have read different posts then. The post I read utilized hyperbole (with a phrase made popular in Tropic Thunder) and made a very valid point of avoiding "design by committee" and cycles of excessive voting dragging out the whole process; waning the amount of overall interest as more and more pointless debate goes on.

Was nice but typical of you to not read any of my intervening posts. I've never seen a group of people get so worked up because someone made a humorous quip to tell someone to relax.

Enjoy Percivals sprack antics and your fugly redux I'm done

Re: Forum design vote #6 (again)

Hmm, I didn't see anything that any of you guys said as a big deal but ok...
