Found a local made Les Paul copy that looks promising

Re: Found a local made Les Paul copy that looks promising

Didn't see Jeff Watson hit his toggle when he 8-fingered.

Eh? Who knows ..he might have started out hitting it all day long? Then found a way around it. Ultimately ..it's what you're used to and more comfortable with..

Personally...I'm more into superstrats..

See...no Steven Hawking Style (....and no toggle switch problems...obviously :) )

Re: Found a local made Les Paul copy that looks promising

Ahh, I see, you anchor your forearm to the body. Try a free-floating piano-player Stanley Jordan style.

Re: Found a local made Les Paul copy that looks promising

Well, personally I think it's more stable/comfortable my way & I'm kinda used to it ..so ..can't really complain.

You know ...if it ain't broke.. ;)

Looks like from what I can gather is the CMG had a US and Import lineup setup, but the imports arnt being made anymore

The imports where apperently going for $375 new, compared the the nicer US model for $750.

If anyone can help me confirm this it would be great!

I am sure that they are legit, my store owner seems to be super in love with them and knows the owner well, I think.

I might see if I can get a custom order through my local shop for a 4 pot version in Georgia Sunburst

Edit: found an ad for an import I think http://mitchellguitars.blogspot.com/2011/12/chris-mitchell-guitars-ashlee-ga-honey.html?m=1

I think you're wasting your time trying to convince some that CMG actually builds guitars, from blanks to finish, here in the USA. Like you mentioned, it's highly unlikely that he staged a video. Heck, if you personally went to Georgia and saw the operation, and videoed it yourself, it probably wouldn't make a difference. Some folks simply wont believe it. I'm not being critical of the skeptics, that's just the way it is. I can see how $800 to produce a quality, all USA made LP-ish guitar, by a small shop, is a hard sell. I'm not in the market and have no skin in the game but I saw a video posted a while back on another forum and that was enough for me to give them the benefit of the doubt. And I'm usually cynical as hell. If I were looking, I would do some research of my own to be 100% sure. And I don't think it helps CMG with the way they push the controls as being superior. I think it's clearly labor and some cost cutting. But if I were a betting man, my bet would be on them being USA made, from blanks to finish.

One last thing. It's not a LP. If one wants a LP they should buy a LP. The CMG should be seen as it's own guitar. Personally, I'd be drawn to the lack of weight relief and the substantial neck. And my biggest question (without getting into a tonewood debate) would be what "mahogany" are they using.

Well said

It is quite different from a Les Paul, but will have the same basic sound, feeling, and look as one. The body cut is a bit off, but it's not super noticeable.

When I contact Chris about possibly doing a 4 control setup, I'll ask him about the Wood species

New info guys!

"Ours is actually Khaya Mahogany - African Mahogany.  We sometimes use Sepele as well.

We just did a prototype with Red Grandis.  It’s a lighter wood and is completely sustainable.

The uncharge for you would only be $50 for the extra pot.  It will have to be done by hand (and we’ll have to re-wire the guitar in a different manner than normal)." -Chris Mitchell via Email

It's nice to know they're open to non-standard requests. Interesting about the wood. A quick search reveals that red grandis is a plantation-grown variety of eucalyptus. I wonder what the tonal qualities are?

Re: Found a local made Les Paul copy that looks promising

I don't really get all the scepticism about the company itself, and i also cont really understand why people are getting their knickers in a twist about how he chooses to write about the switching and volume options.
It looks like a really cool and simple guitar built with nice woods by a small company who have a nice, streamlined operation.
If i was looking for a les paul type guitar I would happily send some cash to CMG guitars.

It seems that these days, no matter what you do business wise you are going to get flamed by the pundits on the internet.
Best of luck to CMG guitars and I hope the OP enjoys his new axe if he chooses to buy one. I am keen to know how it works out.

Thanks for posting back on the wood.

+1 to this.

I like the controls the way this guy makes them.

Re: Found a local made Les Paul copy that looks promising

I remember checking them out at NAMM. Cool guitars at a ridiculous price point. I really like the laminated stripes. The amps were cool, too.

Re: Found a local made Les Paul copy that looks promising

WOW.....those things look really nice....Im really digging the green color one for some reason, and im usually against a green on a guitar.....Almost the same body as my Agile 2000....Are those set neck or bolt on?

Set neck

Very nice playing in my experience

I'm thinking over the custom thing personally, as I kinda want it to come from my local shop as they carry them :/

Re: Found a local made Les Paul copy that looks promising

Has anyone played or own one of these CMG Ashlees? I just found them and sound promising. Dont prefer the two knob set up, but I could get used to it. I hardly need another guitar haha, but I A) want a blue single cut to replace my chicago blue lp and want one more lp type for a pickup set I want to use. Im wondering how fat the necks are.?? I like the tummy cut. Hopefully it will help not pick up my pain pump pinging...

Re: Found a local made Les Paul copy that looks promising

I loved them, if I get another Les Paul style guitar, it evilly be an old Gibson or an ashlee to be honest.

They do reasonably priced customs as well, it's only like $30 more for an extra knob iirc.

Custom colors
Custom inlays
Custom binding
Custom wiring
What every you need..
