I had a few spare hours to loose this morning so I decided to go to Guitarguitar, which is probably the best guitar shop in Edinburgh.
I spotted on their website they were selling Toadworks and Demeter stuff. I had my eyes on the meat from the former and the FOD from the latter.
Boy, I haven't been disappointed.
First I plugged one of their Gibson LP faded in the meat jr (they didn't have the full version), in a LC15R, to make sure I will not have surprises taking one of these home.
The meat jr is basically offering a clean and a fat boost (you can't really switch from one to the other on the fly). It was pretty transparent and the amount of grit on tap was appreciable. So far so good, was enjoying my test.
Then I plugged the FOD in... ... ... I was secretly hoping it wouldn't do anything for me because of the price... And it just blow me away. This pedal is everything I have been looking for. You got a fat boost you can engage separately, which is basically a clean boost adding mids and low/mids. Then you have a relatively classic overdrive/distortion pedal with a fairly transparent gain. Here as well you have a fair amount of gain level to play with. The response of the valves was still tangible, conversely to some overdrive that completely swamp you valves. Then the icing on the cake, on the side, you have tight/loose give you the choice between a more modern or a more fuzzy setting. It is a bit subtle but I thing with a good tweaking you could get pretty convincing sounds in both modes.
Basically it was doing everything the meat jr could and so much more!
I had a good chat with the shopkeeper, and we got on discuss about my GAS for a tele. So he said no problem, found me a nice ash body tele, and played some more through the FOD and the LC15R with the tele.
Men, usually I never know what to play when I am in a shop, but with this rig I couldn't help but play stuff that sounded good.
So now, I need money, loads of it, to put together my dream rig:
American series ash body Tele --> Demeter FOD --> Laney LC15R
I know some of you might think this amp as part of a dream rig is a bit ridiculous. But the thing is, it is the only element I already have. And for what I am playing and how I am playing it, it is really good.
Really fruitful morning. I'll give it another try in a few week to see if I am still spellbound. Then I'll put together a financial strategy!
