Re: Frankenbass - Neck pickup

As in, a bass with only this neck position pickup or this neck position pickup in addition to whatever other pickup(s) originally came on the instrument?

Re: Frankenbass - Neck pickup

PJ rules out any thoughts of a Rick 4001/4003 pickup.

The Gibson/Epiphone 'bucker would need to be routed through its own output socket to do the Billy Sheehan dual amp thing.

I would like to nominate a pickup that is not on your list. The bass guitar version of the Fender Wide Range humbucker (or a good replica).

I don't think I can fit a neck pickup with the Yamaha Attitude Standard because the neck joint extends so far into the body. Once you take up the pickguard the neck heel is right there, so anything would have to mount between the pickguard and strings without routing. I was hoping this bass would work because it has a strat style 3-way switch that I could have replaced with a 5-way if I routed for a neck pickup.

Pics, please.

I have Attitude Plus, Special and Custom bass guitars. The two cheaper models have Fender-style neck joints. The Custom has the same arrangement as the Limited II and, get this, the 33k Yamaha mudbucker is UNDERNEATH the pickguard.

Good thinking, Batman.

Alternatively, if you just want deep low end, as if you had a pickup under the node where the 24th fret would be, get Bartolini PJ pickups.

Re: Frankenbass - Neck pickup

Bargain!

The Attitude Custom neck joint will appear familiar from below.

This is what Yamaha did inside.

Re: Frankenbass - Neck pickup

I don't want to try routing that neck joint. About the only thing I could do for a neck pickup is a floating pickup on a neck bracket. What does the neck joint on your standard look like?

Re: Frankenbass - Neck pickup

I don't have a Standard. I have a Special. It has the traditional four wood screws through a rectangular steel plate.

(Scurries off to check earlier post for errors.)

Re: Frankenbass - Neck pickup

That is a very good quality instrument that you have there. It ought to be possible to extract the deep, rumbly tones of a neck position pickup without having one right by the end of this fingerboard.

How generous is the control cavity on your bass?

Re: Frankenbass - Neck pickup

The stock Yamaha pickups are nothing special. If you are up for replacing pickups, three routes present themselves.
1) Active PJ pair, 3-way selector, stacked Blackouts for Bass 2-band EQ.
2) Passive PJ, smartass five-way wiring.
3) Go straightahead Rock P Bass with either the SD Steve Harris or DiMarzio Will Power Middle pickup.

Would a 24-contact Superswitch fit under the pickguard?

Re: Frankenbass - Neck pickup

There's enough room to fit a 5-way superswitch, but I can't think of any real useful combinations with only two pickups? Although a 4-way Tele style switch might give a useful 4th option.

Re: Frankenbass - Neck pickup

5 - Both pickups interconnected with each other in series (Mud mode)
4 - P in series mode
3 - P in parallel mode
2 - P in parallel mode + Hot Jazz
1 - Hot Jazz

Re: Frankenbass - Neck pickup

I managed to score a used set of Dimarzio Model-P and Model-J pickups for the bass. I'm thinking I will also get get a 4-way switch.
