Fred

Today I picked up my guitar with the Fred installed. At first I was dissapointed because the upper mids are pushed even higher than the PAF Pro almost to the point of fatigue and reminded me of the Live in Denver tone. It took me lots of tweaking of the amp until it sounded right. Even then it sounded a little wierd. Then after an hour or two of playing the pup sounded great! Very modern. You can definitly hear the Satch vibe especially in the upper register. Natural harmonics scream more than most pickups I've used. Pinch harmonics could be better. The Fred doesnt have the pick clack that the PAF Pro had and is much tighter, maybe even thinner on chords, but thicker on leads. The Fred colors your tone more than the PAF Pro. I'd imagine this pickup would cut through great in a live setting. Two Satriani songs that come to mind is Mystical Potatoe head and Summer Song is you could imagine the base tone without any wah. I have no idea if he used the Fred on those songs, but thats what it reminds me of. Over all I give the pickup a 9/10:)

Re: Fred

Yep Fred is a great pickup, it is a real screamer, but clean it's gorgeous. More harmonics than you can stuff in a can of fast-fret! it can sound wierd, I hear you there, esp if you are used to the '59.

Re: Fred

it sounds weird to me, I am a satch fan and installed it in my les paul when I was 19 years old...

Re: Fred

The Fred is a PAF Pro with more mids,a bit more output, and harmonics...I use it also and I really like it alot.

Re: Fred

I've never found the PAF Pro to have much(or at least a spike in) upper mids.....it was very well balanced actually.

Haven't tried the FRED yet....but apparently there's yet ANOTHER variation now....the "Mo' Joe"....it's supposedly like the FRED but with more output. It's on the news section of the Dimarzio site.

Yep,but it's pretty specific for the neck position in Joe's guitars..It's an overall less boomy version of what he was using in the neck(The PAF Pro)

Speaking of the PAF Joe..

No, you're thinking about the PAF Joe.

This is the Mo' Joe...it's made for the bridge.

Any plans to market an Ethel? She'll just sit back and scream down Fred? :)

I think the Barney pickup would be pretty cool in the bridge with a Wilma in the neck...:laugh2: :smack: :laugh2:

The MO JOE may be similar to the 59/Custom Hybrid...

Seems Satch likes the whole vibe of the un-matched coils? Probably the reason I've been using a Fred pickup since it's inception also...You always hear those extra harmonics and they're easier to coax from the guitar.

SO are you saying Fred is close in sound/tone to the 59/custom?

No....Maybe closer to the Mo Jo pickup, which I'm not familiar with?

The 59B/Custom Hybrid is warmer, but I'm using the A2 magnet...It would be alot closer though if it also had the A5 that the Fred has..
