Free strings!

Re: Free strings!

The set I got finally took a set and now stay in tune well. Took flippin FOREVER for them to set though!
They seem to be really punchy and thicker sounding than a normal set of XL's so not bad. The only downer is they took SO long to set and stay in tune.

I found that they set in fairly quickly, but that's in comparison to the Cobalts I'm used to using now. Those things seriously do take forever to break in.

Re: Free strings!

So, I've gotten the set but they're 10s vs the 11s I use right now - which means I'd have to adjust the truss rod in one of my guitars to play these.

If anybody wants mine to do a review on, I'd be more than glad to ship them if you'll cover shipping.

Re: Free strings!

Thanks Dr. K I got my strings I think I am going to slap them on the Tele for practice on Sunday.

Re: Free strings!

Did you get the letter from Jim D'Addario along with the strings? If not, that's probably because they only went out with the first beta samples. But this is what it says:

Two years ago, we challenged ourselves to reinvent the electric guitar string. The result is what you now hold in your hand.

This is the strongest set of electric guitar strings ever made. It's 30% stronger than any of its predecessors, settles to pitch faster, and holds pitch better--with wound strings boasting more output and plain steel strings that aren't so plain.

Arriving here wasn't easy. Our engineers traveled many paths, starting with the selection of the new high-carbon steel alloys, completely re-imaginging the wire drawing process, and revolutionizing the corrosion-resistant tin coating application. The result is something you have never experienced before: un precedented strength and pitch stability.

Making the world's strongest string was not enough. our engineers simultaneously worked to reformulate our nickel-lated steel windings. The result is something you'll have to hear to believe. These strings have 6% more magnetic permeability., resulting in higher output in the 2-5K hz range for more punch, crunch, and bite. With more magnetic output, there are simply more possibilities.

There have been only two meaningful generations of round wound electric guitar strings. The original formula, originating in the 1950s, used pure nickel, creating a characteristically mellow sound. In the early sixties, John D'Addario, Sr. introduced a brighter sounding, second generation nickel-plated steel string, which became the industry standard for the next five decades. Today, 80% of all electric guitar strings are based on his formula.

Once again, D'Addario is revolutionizing the electric string. This beta string you will be testing has been codenamed XLforumla3--representing the long-awaited third generation. While our family has been making strings for hundreds of years, we take it as our personal responsibility to pioneer and innovate. This string does just that.

After the beta phase, the product will officially be rolled out in early 2014 as D'Addario NYXL strings. This name is an important distinction for us; our family and company have a rich history in New York. All new steel wire has been formulated, created, crafted, and perfected here in the Empire State. We are proud of our New York legacy, and even prouder that all of our strings originate at our Long Island home.

Thank you for assisting us in testing our latest musical innovation. We ask that you take the time to comment on your experience with the new strings at #XLforumla3 and fill out our beta test survey at dadarrio.com/XLForumla3.

Play Loud. Play Strong.

Re: Free strings!

Very interesting. Defintely will give them a try assuming reasonable pricing.
