Fresh Blackout clip thread

In Fluence Y'all
Everyone wants to hear Blackouts. They're currently in use by some top level artists but the albums being recorded are not released yet. In the mean time we've got some clips filtering in from early users, but some of you want more. The reality is that everyone we send them to within 2-5 minutes says "I want them in all my guitars, I'm replacing all my (insert previously used pickup here) immediately." But you'll each have to try them yourselves to really feel the difference.

In an attempt to put more sound out there into the airwaves I've made a very basic clip of the Blackouts into a Rectifier. I used nothing between the guitar and the amp. I used the Rectifier middle channel, modern position, and the gain is only between 2-3 o'clock. The EQ is set to a slight "Vee" and the cabinet is a Marshall with Vintage 30's. I used an SM58 (yes not a 57) and went straight in.

The beginning is the raw sound. Then in the computer I applied a little EQ shaping, went into some classic metal riffing, then after awhile in comes some stereo imaging and it gets a little um.. "wild" if you know what I mean. Then it sort of rhythms out and at the end you all can judge the clarity and punch of the Blackout as it gets faster and faster. If I do that rapid-fire picking with most any other pickups all the pick attacks run together (they do to a point with any pickup) but on these at least you can hear the Blackouts hold their notes together.

This is just one snippet of one setup (Recto into Marshall V30) The Recto is big on white noise fizz, where say a Hughes & Kettner or something else will react differently. But most of you know what a Recto is like so it's a good reference point.

Re: Fresh Blackout clip thread

Cool, thanx for the new clips. How about doing some high end leads?
I'll get to that soon. I didn't even get to do the neck pickup. To make time for these I had to stay late last night, but as I find time I'll do some different things.

Also if any of you make clips let's feel free to post them here. You can post them anywhere but this could be a good central location for all the Forum bros clips.

i forgot....im on dialup. uploading might be a problem.

Re: Fresh Blackout clip thread

they sound scoop... the bottom end is absolutely massive though.

Re: Fresh Blackout clip thread

Everything EMG's aint!!! haha. MUCH more bottom end. EMG's with a J-Lo ass from that Selena movie she did.

Re: Fresh Blackout clip thread

Just my Opinion. But I think good reference point would be test the competitions pickups through the same rig for a reference point.

Re: Fresh Blackout clip thread

It's always something::banghead:

What? I'm not bagging on the clip. I'm just saying that's it not really a fair go. You can't put just your clip up and say "there's my clip, our products win hands down".

I'm not saying that's what Frank or the SD company have done, but you can't exactly have a reference point w/out having clips of the 81 and 85. After all, they are supposed to be "superior" to these pickups right?

So I'm saying put your money where your mouth is. Clips of the blackouts and 81/85 through the same rig and let the people decide.

To be completely honest I was on the verge of buying a set until I heard the clips. I'll be sticking w/ my 500XL/R setup for metal.

Re: Fresh Blackout clip thread

jeeze. thats intense. maybe i need to look into getting a recto. haha

Re: Fresh Blackout clip thread

Seriously - you guys haven't heard an EMG do bottom end like that?

A Tele will have balls like that when played through a Recto.

Re: Fresh Blackout clip thread

No clips, but I can tell you that I just A/B'ed Blackouts with the EMGs in identical guitars through the same rig just two nights ago. Jackson DK1s, 9-volt circuits into a Mesa Road King II. My humble opinions below;

Blackout bridge: a bit more low end, not quite the dramatic change that may be implied by these different threads. The low end is deep and defined, but not boosted so much that you loose the mid attack and voice. There is more high end and harmonic content. Overall, it sounds more lively than the 81, and has a noticable boost in output. The cleans are stellar, it really makes the 81 sound like cardboard when testing on a good clean channel. You do lose a little of the "tightness" that the 81 has due to the 81s rolled off highs and slightly lower ouput, but it is subtle. I think the benefits of the Blackout outweight the that small difference.

Blackout neck: More high end, less low end and mids. It does not sound as round as the 85. It is slightly less "sweet" sounding, but is more defined and "clean" sounding. Its output is balanced much better with the Blackout bridge than the 85 is with the 81 in the bridge. Again, the cleans are just amazing.

I won't have any clips, because the 81/85 combo was just replaced with Mustaines last night.....now they have some serious tone going on with more low end than than the Blackouts, about the same output, about the same brightness, but a different mid voice. They do sound like the JB/Jazz, but the bridge is little less whiny, has tighter lows (not as tight as the Blackouts), and is a little thicker sounding than the JB and the neck sounds like the Jazz with more output. Also, the cleans are even better than the Blackouts. Super sweet actives!......
