fret leveling

On average, how many times can you have your frets leveled before you just need a total refret? I know that there are different factors but lets just say that its a practice guitar that gets maybe 3 hours a day of play time with 6100 frets.

Re: fret leveling

It depends on how aggressive of a player you are. I have an SG that I bought new in 1968. the frets were dressed, crowned, redressed and crowned so many times I lost count. Finally about 6 months ago I had it refretted and it plays beautifully now.

I also have 3 Strats that I own & all three were refretted due to those whimpy Fender frets. I went with 6105's on the Strats. My first Strat(a 57 RI) I bought in 87. About 3 years after I owned it it was giving me some issues, but rather then refret it I replaced the neck with a birdseye maple neck & Brazilian RW FB. The reason I decided to reneck it is I bought a Clapton Strat & I felt RW on this one would serve me better.

Refretting a guitar can be done just so you play more comfortably. Some will refret with stainless steel because it lasts longer, but I really prefer the feel & tone of nickle. The SS frets just sound way to brittle to my ears.
