Re: Fret pups

Didn't you perform similar experiment on your cherry red Epiphone SG not too long ago? But under different username, Thanaton or Leevec, I can't remember.

Re: Fret pups

I played with many ideas regarding getting a pickup under the fretboard (a few makers have done it) but in the end i just went for some ibanez neck simulation circuitry.

Ok i know this isn't what you're talking about but it did make me think of my precious odd ball. **** i love this thing it's become my main player.

What's the spacing above the 24th fret up to the end of the board?

Re: Fret pups

What if each fret had a pickup underneath and was then combined with all the other fret pups in order to create a massive, all phasey-wonky signal that would exhibit some interesting harmonic characteristics?

I think what you really want is a ring modulator. Less hassle. ;)

Re: Fret pups

The old Roland hex pickups were supposed to be able to simulate neck pickups
Down the fretboard

Re: Fret pups

Have you ever heard a ring modulator? That's about what your 'invention' is going to sound like.

Thank you.

If OP wants to "create a massive, all phasey-wonky signal that would exhibit some interesting harmonic characteristics" then I'd look at a good ring modulator like the EHX ring thing.

Yes i have "ever heard" a ring modulator.

What's with all this assuming i'm a naïve idiot?

There are a bazillion ways for audio to be phasey-wonky. Step up your game dudes. No one is forcing you to reply.

This thread is about fret pups. This thread does not constitute a moronic hypothesis that fret pups are the easiest way to obtain something that could be called "phasey-wonky".

I've shown patience...

I never said or implied you were a "naive idiot" (your words, not mine). Your reply was uncalled for.

Chill out dude. No one 'assumed' you were anything.

Sometimes obvious solutions to specific needs escape the best of us.

Here's an idea... go work up your fret-pickups and tell us how it sounds. Piezo technology might be a good place to start from.

I thought it was clear that i wanted to discuss the awesome yet elusive prospect of fret pups, not trying to find an easy route to something phasey-wonky.

If i ever get into building guitars, i'll try this. Piezo might work better logistically but for some reason magnetic pickups seem more promising.

No hard feelings. But assumptions were actually made. Not that assumptions are always wrong - just that in this case, they were. It's like recommending rolling down the tone pot to someone looking for darker pickups.

I never said or implied you were a "naive idiot" (your words, not mine). Your reply was uncalled for.

Yes, my words. I could've said there's no need to assume i don't know what a ring modulator is.

Re: Fret pups

Didn't some of the 1960s guitar organs work by using the frets as contacts?
Not pickups exactly, but I think the frets were wired as a substitute keyboard...

That's news to me. Cool.

Quite different from fret pups but noteworthy in context.
