Fret Question

I have a Les Paul type guitar with a 24 3/4" scale neck. It plays well but on about the 18th fret, the high "E" string sounds bad. It actually sounds like I'm playing one fret higher. The other positions are good and the other strings are goo on that fret. What should I do? I'm not used to doing fret work and I would rather do this myself. The guitar is very nice save for the really crappy pickups...

could the 19th fret be a little high under the E string? .. maybe press it down if it is raised up ... or file / steel wool / shave / polish / etc. the 19th fret down a touch - just enough to fix the problem?

That's kind of what I was thinking. I like my action pretty low anyway. I have raised it a tad but still, it doesn't sound right. If I look at the 19th fret, it does look like the string is touching. I thought I might see if it's too high.

Is the 19th fret lifting out of its slot? Try pressing on it to see if it moves back down. If so, you need to fix that before any leveling & dressing. I think there are fairly painless ways of getting a single loose fret to stay put - probably involving superglue.

I could help but, I would have to have it in front of me on the bench to see exaclty what was up and give the correct course of action to fix it. Sorry I cant be much more help!
