Fret size and ease of bending

Re: Fret size and ease of bending

I love "modern vintage" frets. They're taller than the actual vintage height, and slightly wider, but they're great for everything I want and need to do.

Plus, I'd hate to run into an acoustic with Jumbos. Ugh.

Re: Fret size and ease of bending

i like all frets except for super worn out jumbos and vintage frets that werent seated properly/radiused correctly. stainless steel is where its at, hard on tools though....

Re: Fret size and ease of bending

good points.

all i know is my strat has medium jumbo frets, and it feels nice.

Re: Fret size and ease of bending

they are harder and a little bit smaller than jumbos... we used them for the electrics. I have no idea where they came from...

I'll have to look into that. Never heard the term "electric frets". I was thinking "what did this crazy mofo come up with".

its somewhere on this page, I guess we just called it fretwire.
I never ordered anything but pots, switches, pups and pup rings.... unfortunately I cant tell the nickel mix by looking at the fretwire...

I guess we will never know.

Re: Fret size and ease of bending

It's either stainless, evo, or 18%.

If it was gold colored, it's Evo.

Since you say it was rougher on tools, I'm going to guess stainless.

Now whip out some calipers and tell us the height and width.

Re: Fret size and ease of bending

its not evo or stainless. It must be 18%

I feel dumb now. hahaha

Im at work now, and I traded my calipers for buttcrack..... just kidding, I never had a pair of my own (not balls, jerk)

PM me your address. I've got an extra set that see no use. You're more than welcome to them.

Re: Fret size and ease of bending

I would not recommend using a stainless steel fret though. I've heard reports of tendonitis setting in and wearing your strings faster and getting a brighter tone. Only one of those could be considered good.

Re: Fret size and ease of bending

I'm not sure if the player will develop tendonitis but it is very difficult for a luthier to work with stainless steel. And more than one luthier has developed tendonitis and carpal tunnel working with that stuff. And since stainless steel is harder than nickel what do you suspect that stuff will do to your strings?

There's no need for it really as you can get lots of mileage out of nickel frets anyway.

Re: Fret size and ease of bending

I knew a luthier who wouldn't do a stainless steel re-fret unless the customer bought him a new pair of fret nippers on top of the deal.

Frankly, wearing out a fret job on one guitar would be a badge of honor for me.

Re: Fret size and ease of bending

My guitar technician will not install stainless steel frets. I asked him about them, not that I want them anyway because I don't but he said he refuses to install them.

Where are you hearing this crap?

Stainless steel frets are very easy to work, and once installed, don't wear. I know this because I have refretted multiple guitars with SS frets.

If your "tech" wont do stainless, get a new "tech".

Re: Fret size and ease of bending

How the hell do you get tendinitis from SS frets? Sorry, but what a crock of crap, honestly.
People should stop going based on second hand reports and try things for themselves and make a decision.

"GUYS I HEARD BOSS METALZONE GIVES YOU TENDINTIS TOO"

Arghhhhhhh.
