Fretboard bends!!

Am i the only one who does this?

if your guitar has jumbo frets (or scalloped board for that matter)

when you fret a note wiggle your finger IN towards the board.

its a weird vibrato technique.

has anyone done this before?

Re: Fretboard bends!!

I prefer not to do this, as it's too much pressure to have to exert to bend, and because I feel that it's a bad habit. I use standard violin-wannabe vibrato with fingers on a non-tremolo guitar, and with tremolo I try to use the tremolo (floating) for a more "natural" sounding vibrato.

That's just me.

Re: Fretboard bends!!

I do this occasionally. But I also use the aforementioned 'violin wannabe' vibrato too, but mainly the wide rock vibrato, done by moving your finger up and down parallel to the fret.

I tend to do this type of bend on the E, A and D strings. I don't actually do it conciously, I just do it sometimes.

Re: Fretboard bends!!

I think these are usually referred to as "violin bends" because it comes close to mimicing the way a violinist can slide up or down the fretboard with a whole chord, "bending" the chord ;)

THough when you think about it, practically ALL string bending is to mimic the way a violinist can "steplessly" move a not around. The "classic" sideways bending itself on the other hand is much less common on fretless instruments, practically nonexistent for the most part ;)

Some people call them this, but the name annoys me greatly. In practice, they're nothing like how a violinist plays anyways. Just my pet pieve.

Re: Fretboard bends!!

Do you mean push down harder on the string? Can't say that I intentionally do that.

Re: Fretboard bends!!

I don't do that.

I just bend up the traditional way. But if I want to bend down and I forgot to do a prebend I reach for the headstock and bend the whole neck. I try not to do that but during the solo I can't think of the guitar and I just bend it. BAD thing to do but a lot of artists use it...

my vibrato is BB king style...
