Fretted or Fretless Bass?

What are your opinion on these basses: PRS Gary Grainger, Warwick Bootsy Collins, Fender Jaco Pastorius, Fender Bass VI, Fender Bass V, NS Stick, Bass Stick, Alembic Brown Bass/Stanley Clark Bass, & Fender Marcus Miller?

Which bass would you have Fretted and which Fretless {any bass}

Re: Fretted or Fretless Bass?

Don't think I've played any of those, so I couldn't say either way. I did play a USA Fender 5-string (fretted) of some sort several years ago, but can't recall if it was J or P or both. It did play nicely, though.

I also had a Pedulla Pentabuzz (fretless 5-string) that played very nice.

Re: Fretted or Fretless Bass?

How did you come up with that selection?

What do you want to play, anyway?

This guy might be a spammer promoting some exotic gear. Just look at his posting history.

First rule of spamming: post pretty pics, then we don't mind :)

Re: Fretted or Fretless Bass?

I kind of prefer fretless basses, but I do always LOVE a jazz bass.

I've been eying a couple of fretless J-Basses recently--can't get it right now--and there are other gear related items I want-so I'll have to see what happens that way.

But I have a fretted bass--so if I get another--I'd like a fretless.

Re: Fretted or Fretless Bass?

I remember playing a fretless 5 string bass that was just awesome to say the least. I also love the Squier Vintage modified Jazz Bass. You know, the one with a maple body, maple neck/board with black binding, and black block inlays. Those are one of the all time coolest bases I've played. Like them better than actual Fenders I have played (granted I don't test out as many basses as I'd like to).

Re: Fretted or Fretless Bass?

I want a Pedulla fretless bass.
But I'm happy with my Ibanez Gary Willis signature fretless and my Hamer USA fretless Cruise bass.

Er, which version of the Fender MM Signature J bass, exactly?

Also, in my opinion, the NS Stick and Bass Stick do not belong on this list. The playing technique of the Stick Bass is fundamentally different from bass guitar. The NS Stick is a hybrid of the two instruments. The stringing seems intended for players who cannot get their heads around the "upside down" bass register half of a Chapman Stick.

Re: Fretted or Fretless Bass?

I like fretless basses I own only one, a Fender P bass. The rest of my basses are all Fretted.

A-ha. An alder body Stingray with two-band EQ and the old "mutes" bridge. It doesn't get much better than that. :approve:

Re: Fretted or Fretless Bass?

I'm not a big fan of fretless basses. I played a double bass in high school for Jazz Band a couple times, but for the most part told him to get lost when he brought it out (I ended up playing guitar junior and senior year, and won competitions just for my solos). Fretless basses remind me too much of the creepy band director hitting on my girlfriend/ wife (now).
