Fretwear of the first three frets

Is this in indication I have too much relief set in the neck? I'd consult Dan's book but the girlfriend redid the book case and I can't find it at the moment.

Nah, I think it's an indication that you play a lot up there.

+1, It's just an indication that you play a lot in that area. I won't even look at a used instrument unless I see a lot of wear in those first 3-4 frets. As Jeff Baxter used to say, that shows that the guitar was played by a "stompin' rhythm player".

I'm not sure I'd pass one up that didn't have fret wear there, but it's the Cowboy Chord area.

Well, for me, it's a sign that the instrument was comfy to play. Plus, I refret almost every instrument that I get first thing, so a lot of wear there means only that the previous owner liked it.

mine always wear more in the middle of the neck, where it's easier to make those big bends.

Mine normally are the proverbial steal of a deal on a guitar that didn't play too well for the last guy, so it was pretty unplayed and I just give it a set up and it's like buying a new guitar!

Mine get worn out up there too. Got some nice divots in the fret board, too. Bought myself a capo, now they're getting worn out all over.
