Frustrated!

Okay, this is bit of a rant, so I apologize in advance.

About 2 months ago I ordered a Fender Blacktop Jaguar HH through a local guitar shop. They only had the silver and I wanted black, so it had to be ordered through Fender. Nothing custom, I just wanted the stock black and I wanted it for Christmas for myself. I was told it may or may not arrive in time due to high demand around the Holidays. Ok, fine.

So, I wait until January and call up, still no guitar. Maybe mid-January. Nope, maybe late January. Nope. FINALLY the guitar is in the shop TODAY, almost exactly 2 months after I ordered it.

Honestly, I'm pretty ticked it took so long! I thought about canceling the order, and probably would have except I was traveling for a week and pretty busy.

I feel like I could have (and should have) ordered this thing online and had it back in Dec. The only reason I went with this shop is the promise of free setups for life for the guitar, reduced labor fees or custom or repair work, and a promotional gift card.

This shop has a good reputation, and hasn't been rude or anything, but I feel like I got the short end of the stick on this one. Should it really take that long to get a off-the-shelf guitar out of fender's mexico plant, or am I just being crazy here?

Re: Frustrated!

I'm going to look at it tonight, as it has a blemish on the finish (which the shop offered to fix).

While the blacktop line in general is very popular, I suspect that the Jaguar probably isn't the most popular of that series. It seems to me like they could squeeze at least one out in less than 2 months, but I guess I'm just being disagreeable.

They probably are not the most popular model, but that just means that they will be making less of them. It's not a question of squeezing them out of the factory at the rate of at least one in two months. There are supplier lists, and there are stocking procedures. You ordered a guitar that is in a budget price range, during the holiday period. That is one busy time my friend. Both companies, distributors, and retailers will be behind in stock when it comes to hot items. The fact that the line is hot, and this model is not the most popular, means a two month wait time, which to be honest, isn't that bad, if you compare it to ordering a white Gibson, or a specific shade of PRS. I know there are differences, but I just don't think that 2 months after that holidays is anything to get frustrated about. Just my 2c.

Re: Frustrated!

Wanna talk frustrated?

I had Will Stinnett build me a custom-made guitar back in February.
The man was done in mid-November and shipped it on the 20th.

It arrived in the country 6 days later, November 26, still a full month before Christmas.
I finally got it at the 21st of JANUARY, again, two full months after it was shipped.

At least in your case there's a lot of things that need to be done and a lot of hands that it needed to go through.

Mine it just sat in the airport's warehouses for two months collecting dust while waiting to go through customs...

Re: Frustrated!

Fender usually takes care of their largest retailers first. Musician's Friend probably had stock within a couple days.

Try ordering a guitar from a Fender dealer in Canada. The manager of my local store told me he'd been waiting 8 months for an American Standard that a customer ordered to come in. He finally ended up convincing the customer to take one that he already had in stock instead.

Re: Frustrated!

Wasn't it a relatively new model? I'll bet the backorder line was a mile long before your retailer got your order in.

Re: Frustrated!

I think that seems to be the case with any of the manufacturers. In 2002, I ordered a Gibson ES135 from Musician's Friend, must have been around August of that year. In October, I got a call from some asshat from MF asking if I still wanted it, because the factory was backordered. I told them, yes, I'd still like to have the piece. It arrived at the end of November. And the electronics were horribly installed and had to be redone, all at my expense, because I wasn't going to send it back to the same idiots that installed them in the first place. Welcome to corporate America. Us little guys are on the low end of the totem pole, dude.

Re: Frustrated!

Well I guess I don't feel as bad. It's a new model and I'm sure my local (mid-size) shop is near the bottom of the Fender food chain. It still sucks that my Christmas gift is now my birthday gift, but oh well.

I just looked at it last night, I cannot pick it up until tonight, after they fix the blemish (which was just a mark on the finish) and get it set up with .10's.

Re: Frustrated!

Perhaps, all of the other black HH Blacktop Jaguars were bought by Astrozombie? :D
