FS: Edwards Sykes LP Custom

Okay, I may regret this, but I'm thinking about buying a guitar that I've been drooling over for a year or more now.

This is a Edwards John Sykes model, basically an LP Custom model with chrome trimmings. I replaced the knobs, pickguard, and switch plate with plain black, but the original mirror/chrome parts are included. I also have a set of black pickup rings, but you'll have to fill the old holes and make new ones, they don't quite line up, which is why I didn't switch them out. This is as close as you can get to a real LP Custom at this price, mahogany body w/ maple top, mahogany neck w/ ebony board, poly finish on back, sides, and neck, nitro on top (according to Edwards). The neck is a little slimmer than the old LP Custom I had, but still feels like a LP, definitely not an Ibanez skinny neck. It's loaded from the factory with a Duncan Distortion set (real, not Duncan Designed). Of course, there's been enough posts about these, you can find them with a search.

Comes with ESP gig bag, truss rod wrench, and paperwork (in Japanese).

Looking for $635 ($640 if you use Paypal) including shipping in the continental US (shipping from Japan was $110).

Sorry about the quality of the pictures, no dings or scratches, it's pretty much in the condition it came in with just some swirl marks in the finish that happen as soon as you pull it out of the case and maybe a minute touch of fretware. Any "marks" in the pictures are fingerprints or reflections.

Sorry, not interested in trades, I've got a killer amp and I'm buying another guitar. It's probably going to the 'bay soon.

Re: FS: Edwards Sykes LP Custom

Nice guitar!!!! Good luck with the sale!

Re: FS: Edwards Sykes LP Custom

Where do you buy these new?

Japan, there are some sellers on ebay, that's why it costs $110 - $125 to get it shipped to the US. If you interested, this one is as good as new w/o the huge shipping charge.

Re: FS: Edwards Sykes LP Custom

Bump before ebay. This is a sweet guitar, I'm just more of a hot rodded Strat guy.

Re: FS: Edwards Sykes LP Custom

Wow, sorry, I missed your post. Yes, I still have it.

This will define it better, Minute.

Basically, if you look really hard, you can see the frets have been played some, but barely noticeable.

But, I can't take the blame for your kid's piggy bank:)

ok, smart alec... LOL :stooges: I guess I actually asked for that, but I am aware of the definition. I have bought used guitars where the seller says minute or minor and the first three frets have divots or are flat, so I just wanna make sure.

I mean please define in guitar speak.
Here is how I view frets:
1) New
2) barely played is when the new shine is gone, but no flattening
3) Some Flattening
4) flattenin and divots.

Also, stock, are the frets larger than normal LP frets?
Frets are a major pet peeve of mine I guess. Im still learning and I do alot of bends and vibrato and it really messes me up having divots in my frets.
Any guesses on the weight? I like a heavy paul . As long as it is resonant of course. Ive heard such good things about the Edwards' but have never seen or played one. So please excuse all the questions.
BTW, I like the knobs you put on better than the stockers..

Thanks!

Re: FS: Edwards Sykes LP Custom

Sorry, wasn't trying to be "smart":) Some people actually do get confused by that word, "what does he mean, it takes a minute, what?".

The frets are flatter on top than say big jumbos by nature, so I would say #2 in your list. They are pretty much like the Gibson frets I have played before, not like 6100s or anything. I don't have any problem with bending or anything, but they aren't jumbos. If you have played a LP Custom, they are pretty much like that based on my limited experience with LPCs. Right now I do have the action set low and it is tuned down 1/2 with 10s so there is a little buzz (as most guitars with low action, light strings, and tuned down have), but it doesn't come through the amp. I can do a set up on it if you want with your strings of choice. If I find any problems I won't ship it.

I haven't weighed it, but it is heavy, like a LP Custom, those are usually heavier than Standards based on my experience and reading.

If you are interested and buy it, I will give you a few days to check it out. I try not to disappoint anyone, I just can't eat shipping charges if you decide it's not for you.

I agree on the knobs, as well as the pickguard and pickup selector ring. The original pickguard was mirror, not chrome, I really didn't like it. It seems that the aesthetic appointments are where they saved money, the hardware is all Gotoh which is good quality MIJ.

I hope this helps.

Re: FS: Edwards Sykes LP Custom

Roger,
Thanks for clearing that up! I Love Lp customs, so if it is close, this would be good!
Incidently, I like the mirror pickguard. That is one of the reasons I been eyeing a Sykes for a year or so. Would match my Explorer.

One last thing.. How does it sound? Very important.. LOL

I understand about the shipping charges. That would be more than fair. Here is the deal, I have a financial commitment that I may be on the hook for. If that doesnt come to pass.. I will pm you one thison Monday. Ok? I dont want to jerk your chain or anything.

Thanks
Bryan

Re: FS: Edwards Sykes LP Custom

No problem, Monday is fine.

Sound, it sounds great, like an LPC with SD Distortions, no trying to be smart, not sure how to describe it. It has the LP tone, but, like Customs, it's a little bright because of the ebony board, and it has alot of sustain because of the weight. I think the weight actually adds to the brightness a little too, but is still has the LP chunk. It also has the SD Distortion sizzle on top. Basically, if you like LP tone, I don't think you'll be disappointed in the tone. It will do Sykes' tone with the right setup. I love Sykes playing and tone, I'm just more of a Strat/super Strat type player. I really like this guitar, and I like playing it, but when I sit down I usually grab my Strat or one of my Hamer Diablos.

The neck is a little thinner than the Gibson '50s style neck, I haven't played one of the 60s style in a long time so I don't remember what they feel like, but I really like the shape of this one.

Later, let me know either way,
Roger
