Re: FS/FT : Fender Squier Tele Custom w/ EMG HZ H4's
I have 2 of these. Simply wicked guitars, especially for the price. Think mahogany, but a little darker. These like medium to high gain pickups with bite and high end. Not sure about the EMG-HZ's but a set of 59s sound good as does the Custom Custom. Hard to go wrong with these guitars, really.
One of mine is a Custom, the other is a Custom II. They are exactly the same under the hood. I have P90s in the (originally) HB one and HBs in the other. They just worked out better that way. I'm changing over the P90 to a set of P-Rails, though.
The Custom II (P90s) has a plate that is used under the P90s so that you can use a HB setup: screws and springs of that same variety that you use for a HB guitar. The P90s don't screw into the body.
That means that if you buy the Custom (HBs) and want to install P90s you'll either need to make yourself a plate or make the holes to screw the P90s into the body.
You'll probably want to get a pickguard made, as the holes from guitar to guitar seem to differ. It might just be because my Custom and Custom II were made a few years apart, or because someone decided to change the template ... or there is no template and they drill by eye - wouldn't surprise me. I bought two pickguards from an authorized Fender distributor (they had to order them, though) and neither lines up with either of my guitars. I modified the holes to fit. Then I got a couple of custom PGs made.
The guitar itself doesn't indicate Custom or Custom II - they're both labeled Custom on the headstock. It's really just a pickguard swap.
