This Explorer sounds very hot and aggressive on the bridge pickup and I'd like it a bit mellower. I'll stay with Les Pauls and I probably try out a SG (for trades see below). It will make somebody very happy sound-wise but make no mistake, this guitar is not just about looks. I also want a thicker neck.

The neck profile is about the thickness of a slim taper or wizard neck, but it has more shoulders, more D than C. Bending on this guitar is heaven. The Gibson scale in combination with the in-line headstock and the added beef on the shoulders of the neck to brace your thumb make it much easier to bend the higher strings.

Having said that this guitar sounds very aggressive on the bridge, I got a wonderful picking sound with a Seymour Duncan Jazz in the neck. It ships with the stock neck pickup, which is a 496R that gives you more of a modern heavy metal neck pickup sound that cuts through the mix.

When considering the price keep in mind this thing is huge and costs me a lot in shipping. There is no way to ship this internationally, sorry. Here's what we are dealing with in comparison to a LP case:

The guitar is very light on scratches and buckle rash but has two real dings in the paint:

No fractures, no repairs, all parts original. Gibson being Gibson, there is some manufacturing residue between frets 17 and 18. You cannot feel this, the high frets keep your fingers way above it. All pots work without noise or scratching. Plug is tight. Freshly set up and intonated with Dean Markley Custom Lite. Case has all latches working and a working number combination lock.

Here is a picture of what it looks like with covered pickups (aged covers in this case, not included). A big improvement, IMHO:

Again for clarification: Case is included. Strap is not. Shipping in the continental U.S. is included. Ships with stock Gibson pickups open double black 500T and 496R.

I traded with people here and I am mcr875 on Ebay. You can message me through there to verify.
ebay 230/100% positive

Trades accepted:

I want a LP or SG style guitar as follows:
  • thick or medium-thick neck, no slim taper
  • U.S. made or vintage Japanese (Greco, Burny)
  • 2 or 3 humbuckers
  • prefer ABR-1 with posts into the wood (no metal anchor) if I have the choice
  • no Specials, Classics or the like

Example guitars that fit:
  • Les Paul Studio.
  • SG standard.
  • the better models of Greco and Burny Les Pauls (Greco model 600 and up).
  • Or better LP/SG. It is theoretically possible to sell me up to R7, R8, vintage SG or Les Paul Custom. I'd do anything for a three-pickup wine red LP Custom.

Don't get too hung up on the preferences, if you have something nice shoot me a P.M. I'll add cash as required. I consider a perfect LP Studio to be more valuable than $750.

[PRS IS SOLD!]

Also still for sale is my PRS SE Soapbar maple top with a Seymour Duncan Vintage P90 in the bridge.

This is the guitar that I bought to try out P-90ties. Not my thing, so I pass it along.

$390 with the Seymour Duncan Vintage P-90 bridge pickup (but real below about the cover).

$350 with stock pickups.

Subtract $25 if you don't want the gigbag.

PRS SE Soapbar II Maple. Set neck, mahogany neck, mahogany body with flame maple deck. Made in Korea. Sound and feel comparable to much more expensive Korean guitars such as Schecters. Wide and fat neck, not as tiny as many Asian guitars but also by far not as thick as a Gibson 50ties neck.

I now include a Gibson gigbag that I picked up from a forum brother for this guitar:

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

Right now it has a Seymour Duncan Vintage P-90 SP90-1 mounted at the bridge, 9.30 Kohm, 8.95 H. As you can see, there is some work to do make it look perfect (it already works perfect). The Duncan is a little bigger than the original pickup and the cover doesn't fit as is. To cover the Duncan the best thing would be to file down the PRS cover to end at the P-90ties baseplate. I didn't want to commit to irreversible changes, so this hasn't been done. The original PRS pickup with fitting cover is included.

If you don't want the Seymour Duncan pickup you get $40 off and I will put the original pickup back in, which has it's normal cover and no functional or optical problems.

The top of the guitar is in great shape. The back of the body has some wear, including a rice corn size of wood exposed at the edge near the plug (see photo). The back of the neck is perfect.

I'd almost give up my 80 SG Walnut "the paul" for that baby! What a sweet axe, and priced very reasonably.

Re: FS/FT: Gibson Explorer 1993 and PRS SE Soapbar maple top (trade for LP/SG)

Bump for the work crowd.

BTW, I ship to Canada. The Explorer in the package is 41 pounds 49.5x22.5x8inch (as I said, huge and heavy case, the guitar is very light). According to the online calculators I could do Canada for the Explorer for $800. However, I had bad surprises before where shippers didn't follow through with online quotes so if there is real interest from Canada then I'd have to drag it to a Fedex outlet.

Re: FS/FT: Gibson Explorer 1993 and PRS SE Soapbar maple top (trade for LP/SG)

That is a really nice Explorer! I am tempted... Consider this a bump!

Re: FS/FT: Gibson Explorer 1993 and PRS SE Soapbar maple top (trade for LP/SG)

doodz. that PRS is an amazing guitar. i've nailed stuff from grungy distorted tones to surf with mine! (with a few pedals of course).

after trying a little bit i've gotten stoner stuff too

Re: FS/FT: Gibson Explorer 1993 and PRS SE Soapbar maple top (trade for LP/SG)

what are the frets like on the Gibson?

Re: FS/FT: Gibson Explorer 1993 and PRS SE Soapbar maple top (trade for LP/SG)

dude, you should be punished....you stole that! hehe. Nice, kinda odd burst but a sweet axe, you'll need frets but enjoy that Luper Prade LP...if ya still have your fingers...ouch! Good luck, I'd take that Explorer off your hands if I had the coin...

Before people get confused, butnut is talking about the LP I linked on Ebay above, not my forsale items. Well, let's see how that crack that the seller for the LP said is there turns out before celebrating. Not to mention the crack in my ribs on the evening that the thing is on our driveway :)

Here a photo of the frets on the Explorer:

As you can see, it has some minimal indentation on fret 2 and 3 under G and D string. No buzz from there.

Or did you mean you want to know the size of the frets? They are jumbos.

Re: FS/FT: Gibson Explorer 1993 and PRS SE Soapbar maple top (trade for LP/SG)

PRS pending.

Explorer still available.

If it's a matter of cost, I would be interested in keeping the Explorer's pickups. I'll give you $85 off. You can also get it with pickups first to see that the thing works and then send the pickups back to get the $85.
