bump, brand new 85 here, if the 81 is too shrill for ya, put this in the bridge or do the 18v mod to get it between the 81 and 85 (the 83) ! hehheh

85 with the 18V power, shouldn't it actually stray even further from the 81 tone and attack (theoretically)?

It's brightens it up a little and tightens the bass response (cleans it up). I have one in a Esquire custom GT setup that way and it sounds so much better than 9v.

IMO, emg 85 mod 18V is the ****ing best active "modern sounding" bridge pickup to put in a bright guitar for hard rock and metal music. Warm and round sound with tight bass with alot of definition. Perfect pickup for my B.C. Rich Supreme.
