"I have a Patent Pending block letter 5150 that has started to develope a loud "swooshing" type sound. The amp will play fine for awhile and then out of nowhere the swooshing will start. I can then power it down and restart but upon repowering the amp the swoosh is is somethimes still there immediately after taking off standby. This amp was bought from Brad Whitford of Aerosmith and had been used quite a bit in the early 90's. The only known issue with this amp was a burnt ribbon cable which was repaired by Brad's amp tech Greg Howard. I have tried new tubes throughout but problem is still there. Anyone have any ideas of what is causing this problem?"

I hate to be "that" guy, but unless you find a DIE HARD Aerosmith fan, nobody is going to pay nearly double the usual selling price for a 5150.

Yes, it is the same amp... the problem was a bad preamp tube!

I just paid $600 for a 6505 2x12 with 5hrs use tops in like new condition with footswitch. The 5150/6505 amps are identical except they changed the number after Eddie left
I'd say you would be pushing getting $450-550 out of it, it's not like Brad Whitford is a guitar hero. EVH owned, that would be a different story. I hope you find a Aerosmith fan willing to pay more though. Great amp!

Uhm Brad Whitford is a guitar hero in one of the biggest bands in the history of RnR. With documentation I don't think it is a stretch asking that price. Most definitely post pics with docs to help your own cause and post it somewhere besides here. This board is generally guys scoring and moving stuff on the lower end of the price scale.

I agree! brad is a great player in a legendary band so with the proper paper work you should have no prob gettin your asking price maybe not here but it will sell. go to http://www.jcguitars.com/

Right, but that only matters to Aerosmith fans - to most guys that want a 5150, it means nothing.
That said, a clean block letter will fitch $750-$800 because of the 'blockletter hype.'

Maybe I should clarify, I never said Brad was a bad guitarist in anyway, just unremarkable. I dig Aerosmith, always have but he does not come to mind in most people's Top 10 lists or even 20. Aerosmith was a total package, not a showcase for a guitarist. Same as Journey or REO. Great bands with good guitar players, just nothing that stands out outside of the band itself

Would have to agree with Northwinds..I love classic Aerosmith..probably one of my favorite all time bands,but most people do not know who Brad Whitford is..and most musicians dont care about stuff like that...They only see this for what it is,which is why I asked if it was modded for the price being asked....one of those things where alot of players would think it was a cool amp with a really intesting backstory but not enough to justify the extra expense...I personally think it would be awesome to own,but Im not in the market for a 5150...

So Whitford isn't a guitar hero necessarily. He's a rock star, and the amp is rock star owned.
Someone may be willing to pay extra for that. Good luck with the sale.
