Hi, guys.
So, I'm doing a full guitar setup. I've searched all over the internet for measurments, but everyone seems to recommend something different.
So, can you tell me all the measurments I'll need?
This includes relief, action and pickup height.
I'm using a Dean VMNTX.
I play mainly thrash metal, so I'd like a low action, suitable for shredding.
I have a feeler gauge and a guitar action ruler.
Thanks in advance. :p

If you go over to Stewmac.com, you can find a lot of great information about these things. The thing to realize is that there are just recommendations and good starting points only.

The things you mentioned are personal preference for the most part. There are also loads of good YouTubes on those topics.

This is an excellent vid about relief and truss rod adjustments. He also has other vids about intonation and such.

Re: Full guitar setup measurments

The reason why you are seeing all sorts of measurements are because there are all sorts of guitar players out there. You will need to find out for yourself what you like best, and ONLY you will know what you like.

As you will need a low action, work on getting your fretwork sorted out first. If that is not spot on then you'll have no luck.
Then look at the various measurements that players like you typically work with and shoot for something in about the middle and see what that plays like on your guitar and work from there.

It's all about personal preference.

I'd adjust action first, and only adjust relief if don't get action comfortably low. Adjusting action is easy and quick fix.

Frets surely need to be right. But you'll notice if they aren't once you drop action.

Pickup height you can only test by playing and trying out how it sounds and what you prefer. Lower it sounds middier and flatter, higher you get more dynamics and scoop.

Thanks for all the comments and advices.
I looked up a few videos and websites that were sent to me, so I think I got what I needed :)
