Guys in the know (employees) have always been cagey about the JB/Distortion relationship........whereas the jazz/A2pro was confirmed. Not sure why the difference in attitude if they were the same.......doesn't make sense.

SD was more cagey about A2P and Jazz until they worked on the Slash set and the cat was let out of the bag. The anecdote I read on here was Slash asked what they would sound like with A5 magnets and MJ said something to the effect of "you just invented the Jazz set." I believe SD would have continued to be cagey as long as possible if that story had not gotten out. If they have a simple solution to make multiple products, there's nothing wrong with that, and that knowledge getting out compromises what might have been some additional sales to keep them in business.

Jazz + a2 = A2 Pro

I knew about the custom family and the JB but this just blew my mind. I can’t believe I didn’t know.

The A2pro is my favorite neck humbucker. I have an old guitar (my first “good” guitar, from the 90s) with a Jazz in the neck that I didn’t want to change for sentimental reasons. But a magnet swap I can definitely do

The knowledge is really only of benefit if you want that 'same wind' pickup and have another magnet to swap into a pickup you already own and is spare.........what proportion of end users would be the sort to do that I wonder??

I did some more comparing of the JB and Distortion. The Distortion has some upper mid jangles or "fizz" that the JB just doesn't have, regardless of magnet. I don't think it's possible that they could be the same. The Distortion has more note separation. The JB has grit in the lower mids. I think the Distortion is supposed to be based off the JB but with a modern twist.

This makes me happy. I recently acquired a nice set-Mid 80s DDJ and JNJ that are naturally relec'd and the whole bit. I really cant jive with the Jazz' clarity/lack of character but i absolutely love my APH1NJ in my Les Paul custom. I will now buy a RCA2 and put it the JNJ to get what i want.
