How's it gunna sound in a superstrat all mahagony? Looking for clarity and oomph in the lowend. I have a JB in it now and I hate it!!

Re: Full Shred and Mahagony

Don't expect a bass boost. The Full Shred does well in naturally dark sounding guitars, it gives them clarity and bite.

Re: Full Shred and Mahagony

Just put a Full Shred w/nickel cover in my Paul last week. 12.5lbs&very,very dark sounding. Ultra articulate and can handle as much gain as I can throw at it. Low end is there only because the guitar is dark and heavy on low end to start with. I would say I have more low end than the average Full Shred, however it is very tight, doesn't get mushy and sounds wicked detuned.

Full Shreds aren't noted for low end grunt. They are mainly very articulate, vocal screamers. Only half of what you want.

Think about a custom or maybe a PATB. I hear that the PATB-3 makes a lot of superstrats sound like Les Pauls.

Re: Full Shred and Mahagony

I wouldn't rule it out because it doesn't have a bass boost. Most mahogany bodies are dark enough as it is.

Re: Full Shred and Mahagony

Well I only play rhythm but I want a nice tight and articulate and chunky tone, I play everything from Papa Roach to all out death metal styles.

Re: Full Shred and Mahagony

The FS excels at low tuned chugging, riff heavy rhythm. It also has an excelent slicing lead tone. I don't care for it much with real fast rhythms and tuned to E because the initial attack is too bright.

Re: Full Shred and Mahagony

I concur with the above statements. It won't give you an oomph boost substantially. It's known for being the most versatile pup. I'd also look at the Duncan distortion. If you want the extra tightness like the full shred, replace the standard screw poles with hex ones.

Re: Full Shred and Mahagony

Well we of course know that in order to get a great metal chug, we need definition on the high end to give the bass that articulation, right?

At any rate, it would help to know what you hate about the JB. That's a great starting point. If you thought it too bright, maybe you need a Duncan Custom (great for drop tuning!) If the JB didn't have enough oomph, we're talking Invaders and Distortions.

Re: Full Shred and Mahagony

A Distortion is probably what you're looking for, based on your description. More powerful and tighter than the JB, with plenty of bottom end oomph. People who don't like the JB and want something tighter or more powerful tend to like it.

Re: Full Shred and Mahagony

Hey, if you already have the JB, get a ceramic magnet from wymore guitars and make a distortion lite. If you like that, then the distortion is what you want. If it's still to flubby for you, then you may need to go active.

Re: Full Shred and Mahagony

I feel that the JB is to harsh or bright and flubby in the lowend. As far as bass response I'm looking for something that has the right EQ range where I can use my amp more to get the lowend I want instead of the pup, hopefully that will give me the clarity I want and the tightness.

I know I've been pushing this setup a lot lately, but the JB with an A2 mag is a whole different animal than a regular JB. it shifts the focus of the bass frequencies up so the "flub" is gone. it also removes the upper-mid spike, but the pickup is still articulate. the Distortion is pretty bright and might be overkill, but like jimijames said, a JB with a ceramic mag is nearly identical to a Distortion (the 2 pups use the same coils/wind, the DD mag is a little larger than standard mags).

I'd just buy an a2, ceramic, and maybe a8 mag and see what works best. I think the a2 or a8 would do the trick

Well, if you want clarity and tightness above all and want the low-end to come from your amp, the Full Shred really is the best way to go.

Re: Full Shred and Mahagony

Full Shreds are very vocal and soulful pickups. IMHO they react to what you're playing better than most pickups. Crank up some gain on your amp, hit a 5th fret harmonic on the G string and whammy it like Neal Schon did on "Stone in love". Holy c**p! (And that's just a quick example to give you an idea of this pickup's "Wow!" factor.) I enjoy Full Shreds in my superstrats and Les Pauls as well.

Re: Full Shred and Mahagony

Full shred was the Vivian Campbell's main pickup in his Kramer days, his Kramers had Mahogany bodies.
if you know the man, you might have an idea of how it will sound.
