Full Shred, any love???

Re: Full Shred, any love???

Many years ago I made a point of going through the entire line of SD humbuckers. This was probably about 2001.

The Full Shred is the only one I never tried, and so always tickles my curiousity and fascination. I have HEARD them played...the bridge seems typically hot with a characteristicly vocal "AWWW" quality in the lower mids, while the neck actually seems quite sparkly. However, I've never actually felt them under my fingers.

Always intrigued however.

You described it pretty well.

I just installed a FullShred bridge with a PAF Pro Neck in an ibby s540 mahogony bolt on. Sounds amazing.

I am usually a Dimarzio man, and like the PAF Pro alot, but the FUll Shred almost seems like a slightly hotter and thus better bridge pickup. This is the pickup I wish Dimarzio made. All of their hotter pickups are also more bassy, this has a very Dimarzio vibe, but is better balanced, than say the Tone Zone or Evolution.

It balances well with the PAF Pro in the neck, had to lower the pro a bit, so the FUll Shred is not THAT hot. I'd say medium/high output, probably like Tone Zone.

And it has a nice crunch, with a goodly amount of swish on pick attack. In contrast, the PAF Pro is more glassy. Like a PAF Pro run through a mild boost.

Its got that wah inspired vocal mid, and is a bit blazing, although articulate.

Re: Full Shred, any love???

you guys say they are thick but i hear they dont have much lowend. i am having trouble understanding

The tonechart says 4/4/8,
But the FS neck has plenty of low end.
It's been my favorite neck HB for 6 or 7 months now since I got one.
It's everything I want in a neck pickup.
I havent tried the bridge, but in Mahogany, you should get enough guts.

Re: Full Shred, any love???

4/4/8 as in 8 == high? That's not the FS.

Ummmmmm....yea it is.

The Tone Chart on the SD website is VERY accurate for the Full Shred.

The High End is the most pushed frequency from that pickup. The FS is not overly bright to the point of it being "icepicky" however it has alot of prescence and is the most articulate pickup I've played....I've said this in another FS post. I find that I have to turn down the Treble on my amp a little bit to let the mids and lows shine through more on the FS compared to the D-Activator that was in my Iceman previously.

The FS can definitely chug if you want it to. The bass frequency is there but is a little bit more subdued....in standard tuning it's meh, but I don't use it for that. The FS excels in Drop Tunings IMO. Slap some heavy gauge strings on and Drop down to C or B tuning. Hit the low E and you will hear everything tight and clear......I think its impossible to get mud from the FS. If you can then you either need to EQ your amp better or get a new one altogether cause it ain't the pickup. Tonal control in high gain situation pretty much sums it up.

Re: Full Shred, any love???

They are just not bright enough for my taste.

i was surprised to read this

what were you trying it in?

i think of the fullshred as a snare drum.
sometimes i wonder if a full shred sucks the light of the air around it when it explodes

Re: Full Shred, any love???

I tried the FS bridge in a LP type, my Hamer Sunburst and a Kramer Focus (OFR). And the neck version in a hardtail Strat type.

It's definitely not a pickup with an EQ rating of highs == 2x mids == 2x bass. I think the DD, for example, has more highs.

It sounds more "assertive", follows the playing more tightly, though.
