Full Shred or Screamin Demon with A2 magnet?

Hello all! I'm a bit new to the forum, but have been lurking for awhile, so I decided to finally join yesterday.

Anyways, I've always wondered something and wanted to present the question here: what would a Full Shred and/or Screamin Demon sound like with an Alnico 2 mag? Has anyone tried them?

I'm curious as I've always liked the look of both but wanted to know if the A2 would warm them up. Any help is appreciated. Thanks again y'all, and I look forward to becoming active in the community

Welcome! What kind of guitar/wood, and what kind of music are you playing?

An A2 will warm up both of those PU's, especially the Screamin' Demon. I'd also consider an UOA5 magnet.

I'd probably throw this thing into a Les Paul copy (LTD or Agile), so mahogany body/maple neck (and ebony board if that matters).

What's the UOA5 magnet?

It sits somewhere between a full A5 and an A2. It's got a nice flavor to it. It's surprising that it's not used more often stock.

+1. UOA5's are my favorite magnet, thank god for Addiction FX. They have the rich vintage texture of an A2, but with slightly more high-end, and a bit less mids. The low end isn't quite as loose either.

With you, me, and a few others continually promoting UOA5's, they're starting to catch on with members. I'd like to see some PU makers use them.

Lol, if we get royalties. I have a UOA5 59n in my Shecter Blackjack. Love it there. Had one in the JB in the bridge of the same guitar. It did fantastic 80's Dio guitar sound. I wound up swapping it for a double thick ceramic because I wanted more of a scooped metal sound. It works.

Why, oh why doesn't Duncan have a '59 set with UOA5's??? That would certainly fit the name 'Vintage Blues Set' much better than the stock A5's they have in them. Rather than royalties on UOA5's, we'd make more money if we got a dollar every time someone complained about '59N's being bassy and '59B's being bright and thin.

wait, wait, wait, back to the Sceamin' Demon. The beauty of this pickup is it's ability to slice through the band mix. Wouldn't putting an A2 in it ruin that? Now, I for one, would love to see an 8-9k wound Demon so as to match the bridge more sonically.

Who knows the physical makeup of the Demon and why it sounds the way it does? I mean, it can't just be an over wound '59 with Hex heads?

What's the deal? and why no neck version?

I put the Demon in 2 different LPs and it sounds amazing in my fuller sounding LP, than it did in a brighter one.

I bet a Demon A2 would be a great neck pickup to match with a Demon A8 at the bridge.

The thing some of us run into with '59N's in LP's is that darn boomy/bassy thing. I like '59N's in SG's, as those thin bodies don't produce as much low end. And once you try a '59B with an UOA5, you may not want to go back to the stock version.

If you want to cut thru with a sharp high end, that works as long as there aren't other band members up there in that EQ too. I prefer to cut thru with mids, as they're not so uni-directional and pack a bigger punch. Bright, top heavy guitar tones can be hard on the ears.

I'd also like to see a 9K Demon, but I'd use it for the bridge slot, and with a warm magnet.

Good question. I have a Full Shred in the neck of my Les Paul and love it. I did swap the bridge side coil hex poles with filisters though. That beefed it up just a bit. I still have the set of 57s that came with the LP and was thinking of putting an A2 from one of those into the Full Shred.

I put the Demon in 2 different LPs and it sounds amazing in my fuller sounding LP, than it did in a brighter one.

The Demon is wound with 43AWG wire as apposed to 42AWG. It's thinner. The Custom series and Full Shred are also wound with 43AWG. The kicker is, the Demon's coils are not filled up with the wire so there's less winds. Now, add in the A5, screw and hex poles. The description of it fits.

I have 2, one in the neck and one in the bridge, of my #1 Frankenstrat. There doesn't need to be a neck version. It is an amazing neck pickup as it is. Try it, you'll be surprised.

I don't find it too bright at all. Could be how I EQ my amp. It does cut through the mix well, no doubt there, but I wouldn't call it sharp. It *can* be, but so can any pickup if the amp is EQ'd that way.
