Full Shred users........Prophet? Anyone?

I have become disappointed with the Demon in my Gothic SG. It lacks the fullness of my other Demon loaded SG X (which is solid wood with a single bridge hum, no pickguard and a rosewood neck. The Gothic has an ebony fretboard and is cutout underneth the pickguard) I believe the cutout wood and the ebony fretboard are the reasons the Gothic sounds thinner in the bridge.

When I listen to the sound samples on the site the Demon, Custom Custom and Full Shred sound the best to my ears. They are full and open.

My question is will the Full Shred sound similar to the Demon with more bass and fat tone to make up for the guitars construction.

Re: Full Shred users........Prophet? Anyone?

I have both pickups layin around and have no use for them.
I can't exactly describe the differences between both pickups. Just my opinion of both pickups.
The demon sounds for me like a paf with a bit more output and brighter, which also means a bit more thin, a "Paf-ish" shred tone.
The full shred sounds fat and crunchy, but also compressed - it doesn't have the output which i excepted from its name. Let me say it has a metal/hardrock tone compressed for a moderate output. No "Paf-Vibe".

PS. Sounds like the full shred is the opposite of the demon:
Both have moderate output, One is more PAF-oriented and the other is metal-oriented.

Re: Full Shred users........Prophet? Anyone?

Unfortunatly no ... the bass on the Full Shred is really tight so in guitars that don't have that bottom end, the bass will hide in the background.

I think you'll be better off with the CC in this case

Hope this helps

Re: Full Shred users........Prophet? Anyone?

I think both are the "misunderstood" models of Seymour Duncan, cause its names doesn't stand for what you expect. (High Output)

Re: Full Shred users........Prophet? Anyone?

I would have to agree with Prophet. I've got a Full Shred in my 85 V, and it sounds wonderful, but the bottom end is definitely tight. On an SG, I think you'd be disappointed with the results. However, if you're wanting a gutsy sounding pickup in an SG, you might consider an Invader. The CC should sound good, too, but I don't have a lot of experience with those.

Re: Full Shred users........Prophet? Anyone?

I had a Duncan Distortion is the bridge of my SG Standard and I loved it for years. I recently changed it out for a 500T, and I will probably be putting the Distortion back in it.

I tried a JB and Invader and they were both not my cup of tea. Invader was muddy, and the JB's mids were annoying in the SG.

Re: Full Shred users........Prophet? Anyone?

In my experience, the Screamin' Demon has more low end than a Full Shred. You could thicken the Demon you have by changing out the A5 magnet for an A2. It smooths out the high end and increases the mids, but probably not nearly as much as a Custom Custom. While the bass wasn't as tight as with the A5, it was not muddy at all. I have recently switched back to the A5 on my Demon because I like the added presence with the A5. Hope this helps.

Re: Full Shred users........Prophet? Anyone?

Thanks for the replys guys, I've been away so I couldn't reply sooner.

I should have mentioned that I tune in C and sometimes B so the tight bottom end is mandatory. No mud for me.

Maybe I should just ask if the Full Shred sounds fuller than a Distortion? I want that fat punch and bite with insane harmonics. I get that from the Demon in my SG X just not in the Gothic. Which of the 2 will sound more compressed?

Re: Full Shred users........Prophet? Anyone?

The person to drop a PM to in that case would be Sykes ... he uses both the Full Shred and the Distortion, I know he'll be able to help you out on that one

Re: Full Shred users........Prophet? Anyone?

I had the same problem (sort of) in my sg except that the high end was to bright and shrill, and there wasn’t enough mids to make the pickup sound thicker. If u get a pickup with more mids like a distortion or a custom that should solve your problem. The custom is similar to the demon I reckon but its just more chunkier in the mids and there is more power behind it. Also the high end isnt as sharp and thin but still cuts thru nicely, and the bass notes are big but tight. Great pickup.

Re: Full Shred users........Prophet? Anyone?

I know eveyone is talking about the Full shred in the bridge, but how does it sound in the neck?
I was thinking about getting that or a Jazz in the neck, but im still not sure.

Re: Full Shred users........Prophet? Anyone?

I'm not really keen on how the FS sounds in the neck position. They just seem a little too boomy for my tastes. I like a little lower power output for the neck, though, so maybe that's my problem.

the fs neck has about the same output as a jazz neck according to sd catalogue

Re: Full Shred users........Prophet? Anyone?

Just one idea ; if you think the full shred is too treebly and lack basse you could try to change 6 allen screws for six regular ones the 6 witch are away from the bridge . I didn't try this but done it in the other way , in a c5 with i found too bassy and muddy i put 6 allen screws and it tightened it really well , so it could work in the other way , and i just remember i done it recently in a Demon; i changed the 6 allen screws for regular gibson ones ( bigger head than duncan's ) and it made the demon a bit more polite , still agressive though . :cool3:

Re: Full Shred users........Prophet? Anyone?

The FS neck is lower output than the bridge model. I like the FS neck in my cheapo Ibanez Gax70. It mated well with the Duncan Distortion I had to take out of there for a trade. I did take out 6 pole pieces altogether for a pseudo split pattern S shape. Worked great for me for jazzier tones from the neck

Fab regnaught, good advice about taming the bridge pup with 6 slotted screws in place of the allen poles. I have done the same as you have by taking out the slotted poles instead of putting them in. Should work like you said.

Re: Full Shred users........Prophet? Anyone?

Thats a lot for the help, guys.

One question, though: Is it clear(not muddy) when it comes to dynamics and picking in the neck position?

Re: Full Shred users........Prophet? Anyone?

I can only speak for the next, as I am playing it as I speak. It is very bassy in my Mahogany guitar, but thats a given. I do not use it all for distortion, strictly cleans. I love the clean sound I can get out of it. Treble, mine doesnt have too much. I crank the Treble on my amp and get great tones though, how about you just try the pup and return it if you dont like it?

Re: Full Shred users........Prophet? Anyone?

Anyone use a full shred in a detuned guitar? I am considering trying one in C# tuning.
