Full size JB vs. JB Junior

how close does the jr get to the full size pickups tone? is there any one huge glaring difference or does it get pretty close?

is the JR about as hot as the hot rails?n DC resistance is similar (16-something K) but that doesnt always mean one is hotter than the other. I remember the hotrails being a muffled bass heavy pickup. is the JB jr more versatile and more airy? brighter? :baby:

Re: Full size JB vs. JB Junior

I had a JBJr in this setup:

2 single-sized hums at the bridge.

I had the JBJr in the slot closest to the bridge, and a Lil59 in the 2nd slot. The JB actually sounded more like a Distortion - very aggressive and driven. I actually liked it more than I do a full-size JB.

I think someone here said all the Jrs use ceramic magnets?

Anyhoo, I ordered 3 Custom Shop Jr-format pickups some years back - a DistortionJr, CustomJr, and JazzJr - requesting that each one sound as close to their full-size namesake (didn't know about wire gauge and all those other pesky details at the time  )

The DistortionJr sounds more like a full Custom, the JazzJr sounds like a full-size Jazz, and the CustomJr sounds a bit like a full-size 59.

Re: Full size JB vs. JB Junior

Hi, new to the forum. I'm currently using a Hotrails in the neck postition & was thinking of & am going to be getting a JB junior cause i used a full size JB a while back in another guitar & thought it sounded great. I know the JB was designed for the bridge but they make a junior for the neck why not a full size one?

Re: Full size JB vs. JB Junior

Good question actually. Im not sure exactly. But the Jazz has always been touted as being the matched neck pickup for the JB

Re: Full size JB vs. JB Junior

I actually liked the the JB in the neck, is there a actual neck pick up close to this sound? I use a Distortion on the bridge.

Re: Full size JB vs. JB Junior

Why not just use the JB in the neck if you dig how it sounds? No rule says you cant. I think the only reason to avoid it would be if it doesnt balance well with the distortion. Did you have a hard time balancing the volume between the 2?

No, it was fine. I also turned it round so the adjustable poles were at the neck. That JB is currently in the bridge of another but i may put it back.

Re: Full size JB vs. JB Junior

Ive never tried a JB in the neck so im not sure how close you can get to that sound with an actual neck pickup. But if the bridge worked for you I say just pick up another JB bridge.

I did have a guitar that has a Distortion in the bridge and a Jazz in the neck and it I always felt to get a good balance I had to have the bridge lower and the neck higher than i would have liked. So maybe the bridge JB is just the ticket. I bet it sings nicely when pushing leads on the neck. Hmmmm... Now I wanna try it in the neck too.

Re: Full size JB vs. JB Junior

:smash: Yeah slight hijack but his question was more interesting.

To answer yours. no the fullsize JB and the lil JB dont really sound alike. To be honest I didnt dig the lil JB in the bridge slot. It is brighter than a normal JB ill give it that. Has lots of output and sizzle but doesnt seem to chunk as well. Not sure about being "airy" I thought it sounded much better under gain. Clean it seemed a bit harsh.

Actually depending on how you use it the Jazz might work. I guess I shouldnt have said "balance" I like my neck pickups to be able to push harder than my bridge pickups. If i need clean ill roll off the volume knob. If your wanting their volume to match thats easier to do. Though tonally I find the Jazz to be nice and bright. Fairly even if you strum. Doesnt seem to have the same texture in the mids that a JB does. This can be a good thing depending on what your after.

I'll try a few things but if they don't measure up i'll just stick with JB. Cheers man.

Re: Full size JB vs. JB Junior

I like the JB as a neck pickup with a Custom in the bridge. I also had a KV-2 that had an actual neck JB. I didn't notice any tonal difference between that and a standard JB in the neck.

LMAO - very simply, no. They do NOT sound like each other.. I wanted a full sized JB sound in one of my strats, and the JBjr did not provide that.. not even close.. it ended up in the middle position, and it functions as a manhole cover essentialy.. I eventually dremeled the pickguard and slapped a full size JB in there..
