Hi folks,
I've got an Epiphone Joe Pass jazz box. I run 12-50 flat wound chromes on. I'm happy with the sound of the strings. And the guitar but I know that there's a jazzier tone hiding in
This guitar.
Right now the p'ups are stock Epiphone (Korean) the Axe was
Built at the Samick factory in '99. To the best of my knowledge it has Alnico V Classic humbuckers.
They're nice sounding, but I'd like something "jazzier".
Also I have another less expensive guitar that I'd like to put
a different set of 'Buckers into. So I plan to put the Epi p'ups into the other guitar and buy a pair of new p'ups for the
Epi.
So all that to get to this.
I'm looking for recommendations for SD p'ups that are voiced for jazz and work well in a hollowbody.
The hardware on the Epiphone is naturally aged gold so not
looking for chrome or nickel (but will take any suggestions).
Prefer probably uncovered as brand new shiny gold would
look as out of place on this guitar as shiny anything.

It's very nicely honestly vintage (not "relic'd"). So any suggestions are immensely appreciated. I'm not limited to SD
p'ups, but I'm starting my search here as I've heard good
things about SD quality and price.

kill the epiphone pickups with fire....
but keep the old gold covers :)
buy a sexy sounding new set of pickups like seth lovers.
Put the old covers on them.
Replace all the pots, caps switch and jack.
Another nice upgrade while you are working on it is a better bridge than the epi has. Check out gotoh or even the ones from guitarfetish. A chunkier tailpiece adds mass too.
I did all this to my 90 something korean joe pass (except i just used shiny new pickups instead of the old covers).
It worked a treat. Sounded 100% better.

Came to say Seths. It's already been covered. If you want more spank, go with Phat Cats.

I tried epiphone covers on duncan pickups before, would not recommended! Total tone suckers plus they don't fit properly

Well, there's the obvious (Jazz) plus Seth's, '59s, A2Pro for something brighter and more acoustic sounding... Benedettos, too...

Kill those pickups (and covers too) with fire.

Find a set of low output pickups like Seths with gold covers.

This is Gertrude, my L-5CES copy. I too use D'Adds 12-50 on this one.

So, in my case, an A3n/A2b modded Jazz set work wonders for dark-ish but articulated "Jazz tone", so I think it would work well on yours too.

I can't help you with the relicing of gold covers as I hate relicing with a a passion; in my case the hardware is nickel-plated, so no problems for me in the cosmetic dept.

Change the harness with one made with good components; the Epi one sucks big donkey balls, to say the least.

Pre-Fender Guild HB-1s. (The American-made ones with the terminals sticking out of the underside.)

What does an A2 do for the sound of the JB, and why A3 in the Jazz as opposed to another A2?

As said by the head of the Custom Shop, an A2 Jazz b is an APH-1b.

Being Gertrude a 20 fretter, the A3 slightly reduced but tight bass and sweet but articulated highs makes a set which tone is a match made in Heaven, keeping the clarity needed to the complex chordwork Jazz music usually requires.

FWIW, I like the sound of '59s better than Seths in my Epiphone Dot when playing jazz. They sound better when rolling off the tone a bit.
