Fun with Compressors!

I took some time tonight to play with my DynaComp. I've had it for months and only used it a time or two. I had trouble dialing this two knob devil in.

But tonight I seemed to get it.

For once I really felt that this could have a permanent place in my rig. Certainly not an always on piece but more for texture in the right moments.

I loved how I could add sustain to such clean notes. It made for some fun clean leads.

I really liked how it smoothed out my fingerpicking. It really tamed the bass notes and helped to keep them from overpowering the melody lines.

I'm aware of how comp works in a general sense. Helping to even out the peaks and valleys in your playing. One thing I noticed about the dynacomp is that it seemed to level out the peaks (louder passages) but the valleys were pretty much the same.
Anyone else notice this?

Re: Fun with Compressors!

I use mine a lot at church when I'm just picking notes, playing lead, and some light rythm. For heavey rythm stuff it gets a little to compressed, but that's what its supposed to do. I use my Dyna Comp a lot though. I've been wanting to give some other compressor a try too.

Re: Fun with Compressors!

Love my Comp!

Makes all my clean rhythm sound more musical and harmonious!

Depends on where you set the volume on the pedal. What are your settings?

Re: Fun with Compressors!

Yeah, I use my comp alot, especially on clean stuff. Helps to even out my sloppy right hand...

Not sure why yours is not raising the quieter passages... Maybe your threshold is set too low, therefore lowering the peak level, but leaving the lows at its current level.

I really hope that made sense.

Re: Fun with Compressors!

Yeah, that's a threshold thing. It's actually how I like to set my comp most of the time, because I'm not looking to increase sustain so much as tame my right hand dynamics a bit.

Re: Fun with Compressors!

I actually like the setting I have. It was really just an observation about the peaks/valleys.

I have the sensitivity set to about 3 o'clock. The Output is around Noon. Any lower on the Output and there is a volume drop when engaged. I like to try and keep it at unity with my amp's volume.

Re: Fun with Compressors!

I'm going to shamelessly plug my Analogman comprossor that is for sale, 135 dolla! The thing had me hooked on fat compressed clean leads thru a deluxe reverb for years.

Re: Fun with Compressors!

My $49 Monte Allums modded CS 3 can beat you Analogman anyday.

The "two knob" factor on the MXR is part of why I say it is more of an effect. You don't get the option to change all of the factors. If it's on, you can generally tell. It;'s hard to set it for a a more transparent mode, or subtle mode.

But that's part of what makes it what it is....

Completely different types of compression my man...

Re: Fun with Compressors!

27 for the mod kit+99 for the cs3=126 + shipping if you did the monte allums route

if you mean you scored a cs 3 for almost free then modded it, or scored on a giveaway....very cool anyway, I havent tried his stuff but if in the market for pedals they would be the first on my list. Still, I'm selling the analogman for 100 bucks off.....

it sounds great, I listened to some clips of the 27 dollar mod on his website. It's not an MXR/ross circuit though right?

And it depends what you mean by 'beat'. Have you A/B tested them? the Analogman ross does what it does very well and it can be set for a subtle comp and a light amount of snap with the attack control with very good signal quality as well as true bypass. Dimed it gets a wonderfully musical squash.

Re: Fun with Compressors!

I had the Allums CS-3 as well ...I spent about $110 between the pedal and the mods, and I felt it was brilliant for low signal clean stuff, it really was just OK for the driving compression, and the squish on the start of the note was hard to dial out with any bucker. I ended up selling it.

Theres no doubt its a great mod, but I always got the impression it was dialled in for strat SC tones...but that could be just me. I'm still on the hunt for a compressor that doesn't screw with the attack of a 'bucker too much.

Re: Fun with Compressors!

I agree that it's a weak comparison. Still, for me, the CS-3 rules! And incidentally I got it for P-90's....

And at $49 - it rules period!

3? Wow, I had it on 9 while I had mine. :laugh2: But yeah, just play around with the volume to see where you can get some valleys too.

I'd love to get my hands on an Allums modded CS-3.

I don't use compression enough to warrant buying something more boutiqe. But I would love a little more control over the compression. I may have to keep my eyes out for one. It is probably one of the most better ones in my budget.

For now the DynaComp works. But I see what you mean when you call it more of an effect.

Re: Fun with Compressors!

i don't even know all the mods that Vashuu did to my CS-3...but i know it sounds absolutely NOTHING like a stock model...it's much warmer and fatter!

Plus it has a cool name...

The "boutique" ones are almost all based on that one....
Made a few some mates, installed a few "threshold" and "attack" pots on some of them.....even the in my eyes quite silly blend mod.....

Guitar comps are sweetly simple and fun to mod!

Hehe good to see the Hosspressor:D

Re: Fun with Compressors!

I recently got the SD Double Back comp and I'm really liking it. Very flexible and allows you to keep alot of your original tone thanks to the doubleback feature.

Highly recommended.

Re: Fun with Compressors!

As always, there seems to be two classes of comp fans:

The transparent sound reinforcement guys (thats me), and the Squash effect dudes (Dynacomp style fans).

Same with Delay: crisp Digital perfection, and analog dark/rough.

And as always, there is a time and a place for both. Back in the 80's, I quashed a lot. In my old age, I'm more about the clarity.
