Funk Improv Recording

Re: Funk Improv Recording

yo man... great playing and superb clean tone!.
I really enjoyed hearing someone who sepereates his ideas and phrases man.

IMHO if you'll use some more passing tones and complex rythmic ideas, this track will be just perfect!.

keep up the good work man,

Snufkin: Thanks for compliments and critisisms... can you elaborate a bit on the complex rhythmic thing? Yeah, I actually did a take where I tried to do some passing tones but it turned out not sounding good... any suggestions as to how I should utilize some of this things?

Oh, did anyone check out that SD Gunner Jam song? I'd like to know what you guys thought of the tone of the lead guitar?

Well, your ideas are really great man - I mean it by note choices.
but rhythmically it's getting boring as the track progresses.
the most useful way to improve your rhythmic sence is by listening to music - i.e blues, jazz, fusion etc., not metal. it will also inspire you with new ideas and phrases ;).

For choosing the right passing tones a little theory will help, but it aint THAT neccery.
For instance - if you are in a lydian progression, playing the natural 4th (major) between the #4th and the 3rd will be great.
this also applies for mixolydian and etc.
try 'filling holes' between notes - you can really sound like you know what you're doing if you'll do it with taste :laugh2: .

dont be afraid to try new things man! - I really liked your playing!

Re: Funk Improv Recording

I've looked into some passing tones and such... also my teacher showed me how to make hybrid scales based on chord progressions...

I'm still unsure about the rhythmic thing... do you mean in the lead playing? What should I try to incorporate...do you mean things like triplets, sextuplets, etc? or something different?

I mean combining 'em corrtly in a way that will be interesting.
I recommend you to see Scott Henderson cassetes -
1) Jazz Fusion - all abpout modes and chords.
2) Melodic Phrasing - all about improvisation, rhythmically, note choices - it all.
his explanations are wonderful and I'm sure that he will get your understanding of jazz-fusion music to another level - that's what he did to me.

Re: Funk Improv Recording

Interestingly enough, when I asked my teacher about passing tones at my last lesson, he told me about Scott Henderson. He said he'd bring in articles that Henderson did for GW (I think it was GW, at least) next class.
