Fuzz drowning out chords!!!!

Hey, I recently changed my stock pickups in my Epiphone les paul with Alnico II pickups and now I get a fuzz that wasnt there before. I got so sick of the fuzz i decided to change the pickups back to the stock pickups and the fuzz is still there.....i dont understand why cause it wasnt there before the first swap! I tried different amps, strings and pedals and the fuzz is always there now drowning out my chords and sounding like ****. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this, im assuming its something with the wiring but everything looks fine.

You could have a bad solder somewhere. Have you gone through and checked it with a multimeter? Looks can be deceiving.

I'm having a hard time understanding this "fuzz" you mention. Can you post a clip and point it out?

I've done bad wiring, and faulty-ground buzzing has never come through while I was playing, only when I stopped. I'd say there's a coincidental failure in your signal path somewhere else - bad cable, bad pedal, or an amp issue, especially if it's there on a clean setting.

Do you accidentally have a distortion pedal on? Often the simplest things are over looked.

As i mentioned, i tried different amps, pedals, strings, patch chords and string height (its not fret buzz). I figure its got to be a wiring issue due to it did not do it before the original swap, but last night i put the original pick-up back in and it still does the fuzz which it didnt before with the original in. If i play a 2 string chord its not to bad but the more strings added the worse it sounds. Also, i didn't mention that when playing clean it doesn't seem to do it! I'm sure some will say its my distortion pedal.....but if it was why is it doing it with the 4 other pedals i tried?

I have never done that before....what exactly do i do and what reading will i be looking for. Also, what type of meter do i need?

does the fuzz sound like
you grabbed the live end of the guitar cable
whilst the other end is plugged into the amp?

How much gain do you normally use? Do you mean a fizzy sound on the top end and that the chords are undefinable or is it a one-note, constant buzzing?

Yeah, the chords are undefinable as i strum, especially when i play a chord useing all 6 strings like an Fmaj. Even when i play the chord slowly one string at a time, when i reach the the e string it almost sounds like my guitar got out of tune and the strings just ain't working together.....if you understand what i mean. I guess the best way to describe it is for you to un-tune your guitar and start strumming! it ends up sounding that bad at times.

yes and no....if i strum constantly it gets that bad that it drowns the chord completely out and becomes hard on the ears

If the guitar is in tune, it might have something to do with bad intonation, in which case you can do it yourself with a tuner or send it to a tech. It might also have something to do with how much gain you use on your pedals/amp.

Beer$....thx for the help!! i'm gonna check the intonation when I get home, I'll post tonight letting you know how i make out. Just to let you know my gain is not very high, 1 on the amp and 5-6 through the pedal

Will do, no worries. Sometimes it's something you wouldn't suspect.

Any meter will do. $20 meter will go a long way in testing connections in the future.

Also is the guitar shielded? If it is shielded it will have either foil or a metallic paint on the inside of the pickup and control cavities.

I think i found the problem, i seems like its the switch! I checked the intonation and found a couple of strings to be slightly out but when i tuned them it didn't help so i tried a few setting changes with no luck. So i decided to take the switch apart cause it has been cutting in and out sometimes when i switch from treble to rythm, once i put it back together and struck a chord the fuzz was gone!! Im gonna have to get a new switch cause it still cuts in and out but at least for now i can hear my chords without it being drowned out by fuzz...hopefully that was it and i can put my new pickup back in.
