Fuzz pedals

What kind of fuzz pedal could I use get to get a Jeff Beck-esque fuzz from his album Wired? I also love Eric Johnson's fuzz tone. I know both have their fuzzfaces, but Eric Johnson uses a Fulltone '69 too. Does the '69 get that Fuzzface sound, or would the Fulltone '70 get me closer? Thanks.

Re: Fuzz pedals

Im not really sure what you need to get there but I do know I have never seen Jeff Beck with a Fuzz Face...around the time of Wired he was using an Octavia quite a bit.

Re: Fuzz pedals

early on, JB was using a Tonebender. I don't know what he used around the time of Wired. Others have said he's used a Rat, too.

the '69 is the tone of a Germanium Fuzzface, and you're correct, Eric has a vintage FF, but I think he also has a '69 and a '70, which is basically a silicone tranny FF.

you might check Fulltone's site for a little more detailed description on those pedals. While you're there, take a look at the Soulbender, which is close to the tone of Jeff's Tonebender.

I also have a couple clips of the Soulbender, and a Yardbox, another Tonebender type pedal. Just click my sig and look for the links.

Hi Guys, Beck uses a Rat these days...for sure! He's been using one for a long time, though probably not on Wired.

Eric Johnson uses a Chandler Tube Driver and a Fuzz Face.

If you're after the Fuzz Face tone, the '69 Pedal is the best version of it I know of. Most real Fuzz Faces do not sound all that great, but the '69 is tuned beautifully...like those Roger Mayer custom tuned for Jimi Hendrix.

Re: Fuzz pedals

I remember A/B'ing the Fulltone 69 and 70 pedals, and instantly chucking the 70 pedal aside and making a quick decision to buy the 69. I liked that pedal a lot, but discovered the T. Rex Mudhoney, which has it's own vibe, but a real good one.
It's kind of like Hendrix showing up with his strat and his fuzz, and plugging into Tony Iommi's rig. Thick, blatty, and nasty!

Re: Fuzz pedals

Great Fuzz Face clones:
Fulltone '69 (I like mine a lot, but it could use a tad more gain)
Proanalog Scary Face (some say its THE BEST)
Addrock Germanium Fuzz (sounds like '69 with more sustain)
Analog Man Sunface (heard some mp3's on another forum, and its good, very close
to the Fulltone '69)

Great Tonebender clones;
Fulltone Soul Bender (I love mine... tunza gain, and very adjustable)
Proanalog MKII
MJM Britbender
BSM Fuzzbender (switchable between FF and Tonebender circuits)
Aramat Soulpatch

The sound on Wired seems Tonebender-ish to me. I'd probably be looking at the Soulbender first. The internal trimmer will have a lot to do with the tone, so be advised that some tweaking is inevitable (its a GOOD thing!). I don't think the Rat was out at that time.

An old MAESTRO does the trick nicely.........:)

Yep. That's what Keith Richards supposedly used on Satisfaction...right?

Re: Fuzz pedals

I've mentioned this before, but I used to use an old (late 50's) reel to reel tube powered Wollensak tape recorder as my fuzz tone. I'd set if for PA use, plug my guitar into the microphone input, crank the volume, then plug a guitar cord into the speaker out of of the tape recorder and into the front of my amp. Worked great! I read an interview with Richie Blackmore years later and he said he did the same thing. Lew
