Fuzz users

What do you use? What do you like about that pedal? Do you use any other dirt boxes (i.e. overdrive/distortion/boosts) or is fuzz it for you?

Re: Fuzz users

I've used a few:

1. www.home-wrecker.com's Bazz Fuss - a DIY bass fuzz; turns a guitar into a wonderful wall of fuzzy bass
2. I used to have a Univox Superfuzz: totally nasty fuzz. I wish I hadn't sold it; I may build that circuit, but it's pretty complex (for me at least). It was great...total sonic obliteration.

non-fuzz units:

Tube Reamer (DIY circuit from runoffgroove.com) - pretty hot OD and very smooth for soloing.
Danelectro's FAB O.D. and FAB Metal - great blues and metal sounds, respectively
Ibanez Tube King - great all around; my ultimate distortion in a box so far
Sparkleboost - DIY booster, kind of a poor man's one-tube booster sound, but with a JFET instead of a tube; nice for bumping up the input signal
Just ordered a Behringer Vintage OD - to see what a Tube Screamer sounds like w/out the big price tag.

As an aside, I need to build several more DIY circuits: BSIAB II, Blue Magic, and Dr. Boogey.

Re: Fuzz users

This will probably get me banned... but first, Fuzz is one of my most rarely used pedals - so I'm really glad I didn't spend a lot of money - but every now and then it's just right. And my pedal really sounds good - to me, anyway.

I have a DOD FX66 Flashback Fuzz. The main reason I bought it - it was cheap. But like I said, I really like the sound.

It's got a really smooth sound - and easily adjustable - I like to play it with a wah or a phase shifter.

Re: Fuzz users

I use a T. Rex Mudhoney, but I don't honestly know how to classify it. It's got a little button that's an OD in the up position, and it turns into a fuzz/distortion in the down position. It's really a unique pedal because it's not buzzy like a fuzz, but it sounds like if you turned a 100W plexi up to 10 and the amp was about to explode. On a clean amp it sounds like I described. However, on an overdriven amp, or in conjunction with a cleaner OD, it turns the signal into a liquid sustain that never ends....but often cascades into feedback in the same note I'm holding.

I remember when I demoed it before buying it. I was at a boutique amp store, Westwood Music, and had it plugged into a Mojave halfstack. The owner of the store stopped what he was doing, and ran down the stairs to see where that tone was coming from......either because he loved the sound or because he thought one of his amps was ready to explode! hahaha

Re: Fuzz users

Rarely use a fuzz...but if I do I plug a Fulltone '69 into a Fulltone Clyde Deluxe Wah Wah and get a tone that's just like Jimi Hendrix.

I have a bunch of cool fuzz's:

Ratt...an old one in the big box.
Fulltone '69
Prescription Electronics Experience Pedal
Duncan Tweak Fuzz

Really, a Big Muff is hard to beat if you're looking for a great cheap fuzz tone. Try plugging one into a Boss DS-1...the Boss DS-1 really gets the Big Muff under control.

Re: Fuzz users

I use a Big Muff, roger Mayer Axis Fuzz as well as a Duncan Tweak Fuzz and a few others...

As for other units I have a Rat with me at all times and a good bit of the time I also have a Bixonic Expandora...both of which I really likve a lot, a Rat is my number one pedal...I turn it on and leave it on all the time.

If you want a versitile, low cost fuzz get a Tweak Fuzz...

There are a million good fuzz tones out there and I love them all but you just have to try a bunch and see what you like.

Re: Fuzz users

There seem to be so many good boutique fuzz units out there, it would be really confusing if I were in the market for one..

About six years ago, I picked up a Boss FZ-3, which was quickly discontinued (no idea why... no market for it, people hated it?), and I like it for what it does. It gives me that over the top Jimi fuzz excursions quite well, just have to keep the tone knob low or off to tame the highs. Chords stay clear, and you can hear the individual notes. It's one of those extreme effects that I use only from time to time to get that psychadelic vibe.

For overdrive (I play thru an old Boogie, a Blackface Bassman, and a 73 Marshall 100w) I am absolutely delighted with my Carl Martin Plexitone into my Marshall... UNBELIEVABLE. That thing is alive! Really natural and helps me get the dimed tone at manageable volumes and retains all the dynamics. An amazing pedal!!!

Re: Fuzz users

i really want a z.vex woolly mammoth for my p-bass! great sound.

Re: Fuzz users

I've currently got an HBE UFO & it's a pretty rockin' pedal:bigok:

I'm not a big fuzz guy, but it does ad a nice tone to certain tunes...I came upon it in a trade & I've kept it & use it occasionally.

I also had a T. Rex Mudhoney that I sold in order to pay for an FD II, but like GJ said above, I'm not sure you'd really call it a fuzz more than you'd call it an OD. And paired with another OD & it WAS molten lava :D

Honestly, I think the perfect fuzz for someone that doesn't use one a lot or is interested in one without dropping a ton would be the SD Tweak Fuzz....lot's of different options for an inexpensive box:bigok:

Re: Fuzz users

I've had various Big Muffs, a Fender Blender, and some boutique stomps by Analogman and Effector 13.

I still use a Proco Rat and a Boss FZ-2. The Rat I usually use as more of an OD, though it's fun to run the gain up into fuzz teritorry now and again. The FZ-2 is the crapiest, most transistorized sounding fuzz I've tried....I love it, but it only sounds it's best when combined with an EQ after it.

Re: Fuzz users

Big Muffs - too crazy, you are either Dinosaur Jr or Smaishing Pumpkins
T Rex - have yet to try it, I should just because I love Mark Bolan lol.
The Fuzz in my Boss Se7 is pretty darn cool

BEST FUZZ I HAVE EVER PLAYED??? FuzzFoot / Captain Cocunut 2 pedal WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW. I played Chris Poland's thru his Bogner Fish / Bradshaw rig and WOW! That's pretty much how he suckered me into buying his NPN Fuzzfoot, which I still own and love... lol. Hey, after you hear his tone, you would buy ANYTHING!

Then after that it's between the Fulltone 69 & 70.
