Re: Fuzz??

I cant get no satisfaction is a great example of a fuzz pedal. The big into sound is a Gibson Maestro, a pedal that really helped kick off the psychadelic type sound. Jimi Hendrix used a Dalas Arbiter Fuzz Face in just about all of his hits, but its hard to hear what it is because he uses distorted Marshalls which take away from the fuzz. But even when he uses a clean sound (like on Little Wing), he uses a fuzz, but it is very very subtle.

Go to the ZVEX website and watch the fuzz factory video demo. Also, a lot of Smashing Pumpkins (I dont know any of their music, but I just know this fact) uses a Fender Blender pedal which basically is a very heavy fuzz with a ring-modulator when certain pitches are played (like down low is where the ring mod kicks in I think) and of course an octave effect (an upper octave) that is activated around the 12th fret. All of this stuff (octave and ring-mod)can be heard best with the rhythm pickup with the tone at 0. Fuzzes are a real distinct sound and some people dislike it when they have a distortion pedal that fuzzes when you crank the gain level to 10 (like a MXR Distortion +) but I like that sort of thing, gives a pedal more versitility. So check them out dude, you might be hooked.

Re: Fuzz??

I always thought that there was a certain unusual character to that intro in Satisfaction.
Ill have to try out a few and see what happens i suppose,

Cheers !

Re: Fuzz??

I love Jimi Hendrix songs, and he uses fuzz on most of his songs with distortion. The best ones with fuzz are IMO:

-Purple Haze
-Foxey Lady
-Manic Depression

Theres more, but those are my three favorites for fuzz.

Re: Fuzz??

Fuzz is a beautiful thing. I much prefer it to distortion. Listen to Mudhoney, a lot of hendrix. Mudhoney uses a big muff(probably my favorite fuzz box for all out fuzz)

Re: Fuzz??

I am new to fuzz myself but have been learning a lot about them...
I guess it depends on what kind of fuzz you want :)

Purple haze was fuzz with octave but it is a bitchin sound
Blue on Black by KWS his solo is fuzz and octave

David Gilmour uses a fuzz a lot, almost all the time
Cream was a fuzz face with the tone rolled back on the guitar
Siamese Dream by the pumpkins

also I don't know for sure but I think taxman on revolver had to be fuzz

I think of fuzz as a "looser" distortion if that makes sense, not as tight as distortion

hope that helps

Only the solo in Purple Haze has the octave effect, the rest is just cranked Marshall with a Fuzz Face in front. I didn't know Clapton used a Fuzz Face in Cream? What songs did he use it on?

Good point yes, I was not saying you were wrong I was simply saying he did use an octive also.

Another fuzz song would be Voodoo Child

I think just about every song they did... ????

http://guitargeek.com/rigview/427/
That lists:
Various Fuzz Pedals
Vox Wah
Two Marshall JTM45 100 watt heads etc

Re: Fuzz??

I think Clapton used Treble Boosters, not Fuzz's. I could be wrong, but I remember reading that somewhere.

Alot (if not all) of the songs on The Smashing Pumpkins album 'Siamese Dream' feature a Big Muff/Creamy Dreamer Fuzz pedal.

Treble Booster was with John Mayall and the bluesbreakers.
The guitargeek site which is usually pretty dead on has him using a fuzzface.

Mentioned above...
I think that Gish has even more (the one before Siamese Dream)

As well as as Mudhoney a compilation album of theirs is called: Superfuzz Bigmuff Plus
Mogwai (sp?) Uses a few of them.
Dinosaur Jr also

Re: Fuzz??

Cool read, that did answer my question on what he used on the Derek and the Dominos Live at the Fillmore Album. I have to listen to some Cream songs again, try and find the fuzz pedal in there.

Re: Fuzz??

A good example (albeit an annoying example) of fuzz is the lead guitar line on "American Woman" by The Guess Who.

"dwooo-dwooo-dwwooooo
dwoooo-dwooooo-dweeeeeee
dwooo-dwoooo-dwoooooo
dweeeedledeedeeeeeee"
