Fuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Re: Fuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

They are all the same I think...When you go to the dunlop site to buy a new one its called a dunlop dallas arbiter fuzz face....all together like that...

Re: Fuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

The real one back in the 60's was called the "Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face." Dallas was the company, they also made a Treble Booster, the "Dallas Rangemaster." Now, Dunlop made a crumby reissue of that and the Uni-Vibe, but if you want the real deal, go with Fulltone or Analog-Man or the millions of other boutique brands that make good clones of the ones from the 60s.

Re: Fuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Dallas and Arbiter is the same thing...the Dunlop reissue sucks IMO. If you want a Fuzz Face you're bewst bet is a clone and right now the best FF clone on the market, IMO is the Analogman Sunface...The Tweak Fuzz is based on a Fuzz Face but it's not a true clone, the Fulltone 69 and 70 get rave reviews but I have not tried either of them. A Big Muff is a classic but it is a signature tone for sure.

Re: Fuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Yea, that Analogman Sunface is the sh!t. I used to like Big Muffs, but they are too muddy. I would also recomend the Fulltone '69 which is a normal Hendrix-style Fuzz Face tone. The '70 is like a modded Fuzz Face (a blue fuzz face) that has more fuzz and more mids or something.

Re: Fuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Alright, so, based on what you guys know.
The ones i will consider are,
Fulltone 69'
Fulltone 70'
Analogman Sunface
Tweak Fuzz
I play mainly blues and rock. My fuzz influences so far are hendrix and some of the chili peppers stuff. What you guys recommend out of those 4. I think i won't want the Tweak Fuzz, mainly cause its 'too versatile'
Want something simple.

Re: Fuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

You have a gopod list goping there but don't rule out the Tweak Fuzz...it's like a Fuzz Face but with the Tweak control...it is versitile but it is dirt simple...not to mention made well, solid as a rock and the price can't be beat!

Re: Fuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Think of the tweak control like a tone control, but it affects more of the voicing, frequencies and "thickness" than a standard tone control. Therefore, it is more versitile.

Re: Fuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I've got a '69 coming on Monday and I'll be sure to post my thoughts. I'm pretty picky but Fulltone has delivered for me so far.:fingersx:

Re: Fuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I tried a Fulltone 69 or 70 (can't remember which) while I was in new York last year and it was a horrible sounding pedal (imo of course).

I also tried a Tweak Fuzz too and was quite impressed with it. It did sound a little thin to my ears, but that may've been down to the guitar I was using (Strat with stock pickups).

I also have a Russian Big Muff that has a very thick tone to it. It's a very 'signature' sound, and something I've only really found from that pedal :)

Re: Fuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I don't understand when people say the Big Muff has a signature sound?
Whats that mean? As in the fuzz is very generic?

Re: Fuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

No, its a very distinct tone. When you got it on, people say, "O yea, thats a Big Muff."

Re: Fuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I've been bitten by the fuzz bug recently, too.... I'm actually talking to a forum bro about building me clones of the Big Muff & Fuzz Face.

Re: Fuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I'll let him know you're interested, as I don't know if he wants to start building a lot of pedals.

I'm looking at some of the dunlop fuzz faces. The round red ones, are they the ones that Jimi used to use cause i have a poster and theres a lil round pedal on the floor. Are the new ones as good as the old ones? If not, how do i tell if its an old one if im looking around on ebay?

Hendrix definitely used FuzzFace pedals, but back in the 60's they were the real deal with the old germanium transistors they used back then. Jimi would hit up guitar shops and go through their inventories of the FF until he would find one or two that sounded right to his ears. He also used fuzz and octave pedals designed by Roger Mayer during the "Axis: Bold As Love" days. Mayer was and still is one of the all-time electronics guru greats.

I bought a FF a few years back and ended up swapping the transistors out for a vintage, matched set of germanium's which made a significant difference in tone.....more 60's-like.

Big Muffs have several versions to them, so it is not all that distinct.

Yep, just as the FuzzFace has went through different lines of components throughout the years, too.
