Not to be argumentative but the kits are $475 for Rosewood before the 20% discount and include everything but the glue and finish :)

Well, then. I stand corrected...Thats not bad at all for a kit.....Have you seen the new, (I think Taylors) that are ebony body and all that run $7-8000?...

Ha! No worries–I included the link to the Martin Kits page in the OP. ;)

Oh wow! Just saw these Taylors! The only issue I have with those is the Taylor Expression System lol I've had a couple of Taylors and really don't care for that system. But I would love to try one of those Ebony bodies!

Exactly. When I got my monthly Musicians Friend Catalog and saw those Tayors, I was floored at the price....I was telling our acoustic guitar player at the church about them and he said "Yeah, and they probably sound just as good as the $150 Ibanez that you bought a few years ago." He has a point though. I would just like to play one just to see. They are just a BIT to steep for my likens for an acoustic guitar....Ill play a walmart special just fine lol....

Uh, no.

I will say, above about $1200-$1800 (retail, depending on manufacturer) you are paying for the scarcity of wood and additional adornments rather than true tonal "improvements". There are definitely tonal differences, but it's all subjective at that level. Every step up until you get to a traditionally braced, solid wood acoustic is a pretty big step up in tone. (But if you are plugging it in, it's all the same)

Haha! I would say "sound just as good" is too subjective ;) From my experience solid wood as opposed to laminate makes a noticeable difference in side to side comparisons. I had a $75 Epiphone AJ (warped neck, Guitar Center had it cheap with no returns) that had laminated sides and back but sounded way more than $75. lol

I play differently with different wood combos on acoustics–my favorite combo is Spruce top, Rosewood sides and back, Mahogany neck and Ebony fret board. My second favorite combo is Spruce top, Maple sides and back, Maple neck and Ebony fret board.

In around 1999 I walked in a Mars Music store for the first time. I saw a Taylor acoustic for $4,000. The first thing I did was say "who in the hell is Taylor, and why are they $4,000?". The second thing I did was pick up the guitar and strum a few chords. I immediately said "Oh, that's why they're $4,000.". It didn't take me but just a few seconds to justify the price of them.

Taylor makes a great great guitar! Their high end stuff is beyond amazing! I think their lower end offers great value for a great product, but their high end stuff is just phenomenal.

Still kicking myself, the local GC had a 714 for $1,100 due to a crack near the headstock–it still played in tune and sounded better than any acoustic I've touched. I debated and talked myself out of it. Decided a couple days later that I was an idiot because even after repairs that was a great price for the best sounding acoustic I've touched...it was gone when I went to get it :(
