G&L Guitars - opinions?

I was offered a Legacy or an ASAT in a trade. I have played G&Ls very little. I have always admired the styling, but I prefer Fender RI's.

How do you think they compare? do you think they can Shred? Am I missing something?

Re: G&L Guitars - opinions?

G&L are well-made guitars, IMO, and quality control is better than many Fenders I've played - and that's coming from a Fender owner. That said, they have their own 'flavour', if you will - they don't sound exactly like the Fender models they're related to, but they are close. By no means is the difference from Fender RIs a drawback, as great tone is there to be had.

Any guitar can shred, really. I thought I'd have trouble adjusting to a thicker neck on my Strat, but I didn't notice a difference in the licks I was able to pull off. However, if you're going to be playing a lot of shred stuff, you may want to look at a model with HBs or possibly look into retro-fitting some p'ups down the road if it's a single-coil only guitar.

Just make sure you play the guitar before you agree to anything to see if it's for you.

I like the models without the swimming pool route for the pickups and like the feel, quality and tone of the older 3-bolt neck guitars. They built were the way Leo and George wanted them to be, since they still owned the company.

I do like the gun-oil tint necks for ease of play and feel and they do have a nice variety of neck shapes available. I love their "V" necks.

Re: G&L Guitars - opinions?

I've LOVED the G&L basses I've played and liked the G&L guitars I've played. Some very nice stuff and I've got nothing bad to say about them. But for myself, the prices put me off a little. I feel like I'd ultimately prefer to modify a cheaper Fender to my specs than buy a G&L.

I haven't ever gotten to try out the Tribute series, though. They might offer superior value.

Re: G&L Guitars - opinions?

G&L has agreed to make me Lew's Guitars versions of thier best selling models for my new store and they will all have Duncan pickups. We're working out the details over the next few weeks. But I get to specify the electronics and they should be GREAT! Lew

Re: G&L Guitars - opinions?

If there's one thing I've learned about G&L, it's that you have to play them before you buy. Fenders are stamped out like pancakes, but G&L's have a lot of variances, even on the same models......probably because they're built by hand. Neck profiles are all over the place! The main differences between Fender and G&L is the bridges and the neck pocket. On many G&L's the strings are higher off the body than Fender because the neck sits higher. Also, you cannot swap parts with Fenders. Everything is proprietary to be different than Fender, to avoid patent infringements most likely.

Re: G&L Guitars - opinions?

I think they're awesome whenever I pick one up - they're just so interesting to look at - a post Fender Fender. I've read that their necks are split down the middle to insert the truss rod and then glued back together with a clamp.

One thing I like about the ones I've picked up is the gunstock oiled neck - it just looks sick to me. :D Don't remember the older ones I played but the tributes all seem to have 12' radius necks, and that I really like...

Re: G&L Guitars - opinions?

G&L is a great company, and they stand for good things. Their praises should be sung loudly and clearly by the entire music industry, instead of the current Fender/Gibson cacophony. That goes for Heritage guitars, too. I just played some great Heritage LP's today for around $1k street price. If the phrases "Pre-CBS Fender" and "Kalamazoo Gibson" mean something to you, then G&L and Heritage should tap those same feelings. I'm not saying all Gibsons or Fenders suck or whatever, but I for one am a much bigger fan of Leo Fender and George Fullerton than I am of Bill Schultz or CBS. And don't get me started on Henry Jerk-o-wicz. These guys don't care what they're peddling. Guitars just happen to be it.

Re: G&L Guitars - opinions?

my local shop just started carrying them (they're replacing the Fender line with them) and i'm really diggin them...they have a two-tone burst Legacy with the Gun Oil tinted neck and it's D I V I N E!

Awesome! G&L pups aren't bad, but for some reason a lot of people are afraid of them because they're so different. Slap some Duncans in there, especially to your specs, and those should be some killer guitars - and should sell very well.

Did G&L carried Tribute guitars once ??
I'm sure they sound nice on a Carvin amp =)

The Tribute is their lower line....probably somewhere in between a high end MIM and MIA in terms of quality.

Their regular line is somewhat pricy, but you're getting a hand made guitar that's custom shop quality. But like GJ said, with hand made comes variances....so you want to play them to see if you'll like them first.

Re: G&L Guitars - opinions?

The Tributes are among the best stuff coming out of Korea right now. They are using a lot of US parts on the Tributes, and the G&L bridge designs are very compatible with Korean capabilities, so each component is somewhat of a "best in class". They're no substitute for the US product, but it sure beats mid-range Fenders IMO. And the thought of getting a semi-hollow ASAT with USA ASAT pickups for that price is intoxicating.

Re: G&L Guitars - opinions?

since my local shop started carrying them, there has been alot of people trading in their MIMs for Tributes! :27:

Re: G&L Guitars - opinions?

I own two and really like 'em. Great quality and tone at a good price. I just dropped in the G&L Handwound buckers and they sound great (better than the JB and '59 did).

Re: G&L Guitars - opinions?

The neck variances come from the different options available. Radius, back shape, and nut width vary among the 5 different guitar and 5 different bass necks G&L offer. It's not so much because they're hand made, it's because people order them with differing specs.

That said, I had a Legacy for a short time. It was the nicest guitar I've ever had, but I just don't get along with Strat type guitars. My #1b bass is a G&L SB2. I'll never part with it.
