G&L Guitars - opinions?

Re: G&L Guitars - opinions?

G&L? Bad, very bad...I own 15 of them....

(Ten years ago I sold my 1960 Strat to buy my first G&L Legacy, and never looked back. The G&L is a better guitar in every way. No regrets, none, nada.)

Any questions?

Bill

Re: G&L Guitars - opinions?

A lot gets said about their traditional ASAT line, but their superstrat type guitars are really amazing guitars. I've had an Invader w/Floyd, and it was equal in quality to any Suhr or Anderson I've played. Eventually, I sold it to part ways with Floyds, and bought a Legacy Deluxe, which is actually my favorite G&L model. If you're looking for a superstrat, check out Legacy Deluxes!

The Tribute is their lower line....probably somewhere in between a high end MIM and MIA in terms of quality.

Their regular line is somewhat pricy, but you're getting a hand made guitar that's custom shop quality. But like GJ said, with hand made comes variances....so you want to play them to see if you'll like them first.

Ahh .. yeah, tried a Tribute on a Carvin nomad. It sounds nice
Haha .. what am I saying

I think the original G&L guitar would be better off

Re: G&L Guitars - opinions?

I really love the g&l standard singles and MFD pups, esp the MFD in the neck and a standard single coil in the middle, but i usually change out their buckers for duncans. The only guitar where i havent swapped all the pups that i have is my legacy which has an old mfd single from a skyhawk in the neck and the stock middle pup which i wouldnt change for the world.

Re: G&L Guitars - opinions?

I do the same thing. I have three guitars with G&L MFD singles in the neck and stratty singles in the middle. One has a stock vintage wind single, the other is an APC 200, and the third is in a 5-pickup guitar (yeah, I'm an idiot) with the MFD in the neck, a Duncan Classic Stack in the middle, and the Fender 57-62 in between those two.

IT would be neat to see them do a "Hot" Legacy with the MFD neck/legacy single/bridge humbucker configuration. Or an Asat with a middle legacy single coil. I have a guitar like that, as well as a guitar with 3 ASAT pickups. I LOVE their pickups, (thanks again, Leo!) but they are somewhat unique, so I can totally understand someone replacing them. I didn't ever like their old F100 humbuckers, though. I thought they were a little lackluster, but then again, it was a different time. Leo was trying to do something different that would please the musicians of that era, and it didn't take him long to change directions and come up with the ASAT MFD pickups.

Mines in my avatar. Greatest guitar i've ever played. Its an Invader XL. Used to belong to Xeromus.

I just replaced the JB and '59 in my Legacy with the G & L Alnico buckers. They sound GREAT....alot better than the Duncans did in this case. I do love the Custom 5 and '59 in my Asat Deluxe however....they're perfect and I have no inclination at all to change those.

Re: G&L Guitars - opinions?

Another recommendation here - I play a 1991 3-bolt Legacy. Bought it when I was looking for a Fender Strat.

JP Cervoni sounds pretty good playing a GL. http://www.prosoundcommunications.com/english/video/jp/index.html

There's several videos of him playing his G&L. He's doing a demo.

I like the quality of G&L. I have a G&L Asat Classic with the tinted neck. It's Belair green with double binding. I picked it up used for $800 in GC in perfect conditon. The overall quality is better than my Eric Clapton Signature Strat (also used for $800). They both average about $1,399 new but I think you get more for the money wtih G&L. I'm keeping the stock pickups on the G&L and ditching the pickups on the Eric Claption Strat (actually I'll just put them in the closet on the offhand chance I want to sell it in original condition). If I had to choose between G&L and Fender, I'd lean towards the G&L.
