G&L Legacy recommendations please......

Hey guys, I've had this guitar a while and haven't really paid much attention to it as I've been trying to get my L.P sorted. Well the L.P is now superb, so here is my Legacy with a Hotrails bridge, stock G&L middle and neck (don't know what they are, but they look quite old and it's a 3 bolt neck). It sounds ok but nothing special......

I'd really like a flexible and versatile bridge, and I'm happy to get a full humbucker in there. I actually got a '78 for it but am unsure about this now 'coz I've seen a few posts saying that it's not a good pick up for an Ash bodied Strat type?? I'd like FAT middle and neck sounds... sort of SRV, butI'm open to suggestions. This guitar is really great to play, acoustically it's very resonant but I don't think it's overly bright. It's the strat I've always wanted... right colour, maple neck, nice weight.... the only thing I was disappointed with was the swimming pool routing, but now I see that as a positive thing 'coz I haven't got to butcher it for Buckers if ever I want them.

So, what would you do? (helpful suggestions please... lol)... S/S/S... OR H/S/S OR mabe even H/S/H?? I'm going to try to get a Black or Blue pearl plate for it too so it's all fresh! Thanks for any help fellas.

Re: G&L Legacy recommendations please......

If the pickup covers have the G&L logo on them then they are a G&L made pickup. If there isn't a logo then they're a Duncan pickup. The Legacy model used Duncan SSL pickups from 1992 to 1994. I'm not a fan of either of those pickups. My suggestion is that you try a set of G&L, MFD single coils in it. These are the pickups that are in the S-500 model. In my opinion they're the best single coil pickup on the market. Here's a link to the G&L online store: http://www.glguitars.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=228

Thanks Sprinter, I know you're the king of G&L's around here. I do have an ASAT with MFD pick ups in and I do really love those.... so much so I have a 'lil 59 and classic stack neck sitting around waiting... and waiting... and waiting!

Ref the middle and neck on the Legacy, they do have the Logo on them. To be fair, the guitar does sound bad at all... but it's the Strat type I've been waiting for and it feels soooooooo good, I just want it to sound as good as it looks! The Hotrails is very hot... I don't need that sort of sound as I have a Legacy Special and L.P's for higher gain stuff. I'll check out those MFD's... also do you prefer standard Legacy wiring or old school Strat?

Re: G&L Legacy recommendations please......

I have Twangbanger/SSL-1/SSL-1 in my ash-bodied Legacy, and I really enjoy that setup.

Re: G&L Legacy recommendations please......

I put a Fralin "hi-output" in the bridge and it balances out nicely with the other two original pickups. It's not as big a bump as it sounds ... but it only needed a little. I like it ... but if done over I might try adding the plate underneath to add a bit more bass response.

I did have to play around with pickup polarity since it seems that Fralins may be opposite polarity from the G&Ls. Search for my earlier post when I was trying to figure this out.

It sounds like you have some nice guitars! I prefer G&L's wiring over the old school strat wiring. The G&L system gives you tone control over all of the pickups instead of just two.
