Re: G&L Tribute ASAT Deluxe Carved Top - pickups, any experience?
I've only had the guitar for a week. This past Monday, it got its first real test at a killer open blues jam I try to attend. Plugged it straight into my Savage Macht 12x cranked for the first set, then into another guys Marshall Bluesbreaker combo with a Matchless Hot Box for the 2nd. Like others have stated, the stock G&L humbuckers sound bland. The bridge isnt terrible, but the neck is weak, muddy/bassy, not a good match for the bridge IMO and gets squealy with decent amounts of gain. So, the pickups gotta go! I think for now, I'll stick with the stock pots/switch/jack; they don't seem too cheap(Mighty Mite sealed 500k audio pots, Cortek switch). My ASAT Deluxe Tribute is all swamp ash, body and carved top(its the butterscotch one), maple neck/rosweood fretboard. I'd like to keep the coil tapping since it's "there" already. And I prefer black uncovered coils.
SO...JB/Jazz? 59/59? Or what and what? I'm not looking for any specific tone, but I want it to compliment the woods, be versatile, not completely suck coil tapped(I'm realistic, don't expect is to nail a single coil tele tapped), work with my 3 amps(1966 Super Reverb+various dirt pedals, Savage Macht 12x usually set pretty crunchy, and a redstripe Peavey Bandit using the channel switching for clean/crunch). Most importantly for me, I want them to clean up with the guitar volume knob, so nothing mega hot. Ability to find them used on Craigslist or ebay/Reverb another plus. I play blues, some rock, some rootsy Americana stuff.
