G&L Tribute Legacy

A couple months ago I bought one of these things with the intention of just using it as a beater.

This particular guitar happened to be the guitar center/musicians friend mahogany body flamed maple topped variety. I think I paid 299.99 for it.

Imagine my surprise when it turns out to be one of the most comfortable guitars I have ever played. And it doesn't sound half bad either. This was the first G&L I have ever played and I'm suitably impressed. If the baseline model is this sick, I'd love to get my hands on an American..

PICTURES! I have an ASAT Tribute with the flame top as well, and after putting in pickups that fit me better, it's one of my favorites and it gets as much play time as my much more expensive stuff.

They are an absolutely stupid bang for the buck. I have no idea how Fender sell Mexican Standards with G&L Tributes out there. If it wasn't for the [IMO] gaudy flame veneer tops, I would've pickup one of those babies up too.

Re: G&L Tribute Legacy

I'm not much of a Strat player but I liked one of the Swamp Ash G&L's that I played. I cant recall if it was a Tribute Legacy or S-500. I think a Legacy. At any rate, I know that some Strat people try and steer potential buyers toward one of the MIM's or the Squier Classic Vibe. I like the G&L better. But what do I know. Probably need to pick one up one day so I can do a more authentic job of my already bad Robin Trower thing. Then again, that may lead to more money spent on a Univibe and a Wah. I'm probably better of keeping focus on drumming up the money for the semi hollow I've been wanting.

Re: G&L Tribute Legacy

Seems like a hard deal to beat. At one time, I wanted their mahogany tele with the p90's and LP-inspired pickguard, but people kept telling me it had neck dive so I didn't go through with it.

Re: G&L Tribute Legacy

Honestly, I like Fenders, but I think G&Ls are just better guitars. The build quality is consistently great, fretwork is very good, the weight is always controlled, solid hardware, interesting/useful modifications to classic designs, better stock pickups etc. A new MIM Strat is at $599, and a G&L Tribute Legacy is $499, but minus the "traditionalist" perspective, I think the G&L is a better guitar in every way. I've played many of both - I'd take any of the G&Ls and be happy, while I've played complete dogs for the MIM line (and good ones too - I don't judge over brand/origin). It seems like G&L are also growing in popularity since Guitar Center became a distributor for them, which I'm happy about. I think Fender will eventually have to start upping their game on the MIM front to compete with G&L.

Fender, like brand G will always sell based on their iconic status. Sadly, both companies know that and tend to rest on their laurels. While other cos like G&L are progressive at improving and such.

Re: G&L Tribute Legacy

I admit I've never played a G&L so I won't comment on their quality. But I will say that I think the Mexican made Fenders are very well made. Personally, I've never played one that had any major issues, even at stores like Guitar Center, where they don't necessarily maintain their guitars very well. I suppose it also comes down to features too, which I'm also ignorant about in regards to G&L too.

Re: G&L Tribute Legacy

I have also been very satisfied with my MIM Strats and Teles. However, I've never had the opportunity to compare them side by side with their G&L Tribute counterparts.

I know how they sell them. It was just a figure speech.

Re: G&L Tribute Legacy

When you guys get a chance to look at the G&L Tributes, don't compare them to the MIM Fenders...compare them to the American Standards!

Then, after your mind has been blown, please clean up the gray matter from the floors, walls, and ceiling. Thank you.

Here are two links from the G&L website page. One is for the available finishes and the other is for body and neck options.

G&L is a small company as compared to Fender and Gibson. Yet, I really wish Gibson would offer the opportunity to order some of their more popular guitars with this variety of choices for nominal cost.

There is a nearby city with a dealer that handles Fender, Gibson, and G&L. While I don't own one, I've had a chance to try both the import and American made G&L's. And I have to agree with Boogie Bill's statement, "When you guys get a chance to look at the G&L Tributes, don't compare them to the MIM Fenders...compare them to the American Standards!"

And now, here are some pictures from the G&L website and yes, some of their guitars feature SD pickups:

Irrespective of your opinion of the flame tops, a lot of others like them.
